Can someone please explain to me what it means when a pattern says to 'chain a multiple of 6 sts. plus 2'when beginning a project <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> ?

Sure No problem, I will break it down for you:

chain a multiple of 6 sts(this is how many you need for the pattern repeat) plus 2 (is what is needed for either the edge or turning of the pattern) and usually you will have a note saying something like ch 1 for base chain (that is usually necessary to get started)

Here is how you would need to add it all up to begin you would need 6 (pattern repeat total) + 2 (edging for pattern) + 1 (for beginning base) = 9

Now you basically have all of your necessary numbers and from here you would just add 6(pattern repeat) to make it bigger. Ok we want to make a total of 5 pattern repeats, we allready have 1 so we need to add 6 (pattern repeat) x 4 (number of patterns we want) = 24 we will now add 9 (our base pattern number) + 24 = 33 so you will need to chain 33 to get started.
