I read today's article with great interest but it didn't answer a question which I have spent some time investigating.

Basically in my day job I work as a medical secretary and regularly have to type the word "nocte" as this is used by the doctors to indicate that a patient should take his or her medication at night.

Word is insisting on putting an acute accent on the e on nocte as an autocorrect, and this is totally incorrect as nocte is a Latin word.

Is there any way I can stop it doing this? At the moment I am editing out the accented e manually but I'd really like for Word not to do it at all!

Can you turn autocorrect off? Or, is there a way to add it to a list of word spellings to accept?

The other option would be to "add" your spelling to the dictionary during the spellcheck process. Word should offer you that option. Or you can select "Ignore all" any time you run spellcheck and it hits that word.

Hope this helps <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Gillian,

From what I have researched and tested it would appear that the word nocte is listed in your AutoCorrect listing. To remove the listing
  1. Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoCorrect Tab
  2. In the box marked Replace: start typing in nocte the list will scroll to the entry
  3. Highlight the entry for nocte and click Delete

If nocte is not in the list then it might be added to the dictionary. Lets see if this works first and if it doesnt I will research further.

Susan,

You can turn off features of AutoCorrect on an individual basis but not globally. To access the features and turn them off:

  1. Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoCorrect Tab
  2. Uncheck the features you don't want to use
  3. Click on OK

From your question I am not sure if it is AutoCorrect or Spell Checker that needs to be changed. If it a word you use often then it can be added to the dictionary so Word will ignore going forward.

Can you provide an example for me so I can get a better understanding?

Thanks!

I can tell you it's not listed in the autocorrect, that was the first thing I checked. It's not listed in the items added by the temp whilst I was away either nor in the normal global template.

So it must be in the dictionary.

I don't want to turn Autocorrect off because it's too useful - it's such fun when the doctor says "please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or queries" and you type "please do not", hit enter and it does the rest for you!!

If you think about it though, the accented 'e' is not a bad inclusion....the english language treats vowels as dipthongs, and as such, they are pronounced in association with adjacent vowels or consonants...
It is remarkable that English, as a language, has achieved world prominence and usage, as a primary and common means of communication, because it is in fact, extraordinarily complex and diverse!
We find several different (mainly germanic) languages forming the roots and origins of English as we know it today... Which is why we say 'Mat', but in adding the 'e' this word becomes 'Mate'... and why the letters 'ough' are pronounced:

Rough
Dough
Thorough
Bough and
Through

The final 'e' in most English words is silent...the accent denotes (in French, Italian, Spanish and most Latin-based languages) that the 'e' should be pronounced...
The Tibetan word Rinpoche has only recently begun to be seen with an acute accent on the final 'e' because it was being pronouced as 'rin-posh' as opposed to (correctly) 'rin-posh-ay'.

I Think your autocorrect feature is very intelligent - !!

Yes but it is not correct to spell Nocte with an e acute which is what Word was doing. Nocte is a Latin word and Latin words do not have acute accents on the E's at any point.

I have found a workaround - go into Tools-Autocorrect, click on Exceptions, click on the Other Corrections tab, type nocte, click on Add and OK out. But I'd love to know why Word is doing this. It never did before.

Basically what was happening was I would type something like citalopram 20 mg nocte (PLEASE don't quote me on that dosage, it is only an example to show what is happening in Word and is not an example which appeared in one of my letters but it is the way in which the word nocte would be used), and the word nocte (no accent above the e) would be replaced with the word nocte with an acute accent above the e.

It might have been added to the dictionary but I am not 100% sure on that. Usually words in the dictionary do not AutoCorrect but get underlined as a misspelled word.

When I type nocte in Word it does not add the accent mark so your Word was modified somehow to include nocte with an accent.

If you want to check the dictionary to see if it got listed by accident, just to be sure, here are the steps:
  1. Tools | Options
  2. Select Spelling and Grammer Tab
  3. Click Custom Dictionaries
  4. Select custom dictionary to edit (if you have more than one)
  5. Click Modify or Edit
  6. Check if nocte is listed

Following this procedure will turn of automatic spell checking. Make sure to check Check Spelling as you Type in the options box if you want automatic spell check.

Yes you've solved the problem - nocte with an accent over the e is indeed listed in the custom dictionary.

Thank you so much for resolving that one for me!
