The last 2 parakeets I had were older and hand trained when I adopted them. I adopted 2 last week because I missed having budgies in the house. Both are young (solid black looking eyes and stripes on head). I was told they were hand fed. Pudgy is younger looking and not as nervous. He has eaten from a millet sprig I had between my fingers. My problem is that Skinny is very nrvous and will often startle and flap around the cage when I am working with Pudgy. This of course startles Pudgy. They seemed bonded when I got them as one was grooming they other at the time. They sit very close to each other at all times. Is it too late to put them in separate cages until finger tamed? Or is that just a bad idea generally?

Thanks

They will be much easier to train if you have them in separate cages or even separate rooms for awhile. If they were handfed, it shouldn't take very long to finger tame them and then they can go back together again.

Thank you. I have put Skinny in a separate cage. Having a small apartment they can see and hear each other. It is probably harder on me than them as they call to each other. Hopefully I can put them back together soon.

You may have to take one into another room when doing the taming, just so they don't spend the time trying to get to each other. Do several short training sessions each day, and it shouldn't take long at all.

To ToRTrd3d -Budgies are generally easier to train than Lovebirds are if the birds are not handfed. If they are handfed (& handled) neither one requires much in the way of taming.
