I plan to start a vegetarian diet tomorrow (not vegan) to see if it will help me lose weight. I like cooked veggies and salads as long as I can add boiled eggs, pickled beets, mandarin oranges and shredded cheese along with various types of greens. Anyone had any luck with this? I am 5'8" tall and weigh 267 pounds. Five years ago I weighed my lifetime adult weight of 140 pounds, but after being put on various psychotropic meds for depression, and also eating out much of the time, I have really ballooned. I am nearly 59 so I know my metabolism has slowed downed dramatically. I have a treadmill that I never go near even after taping my fattest pictures on it. I worry about having a heart attack, and I hate for old friends to see me at this weight. I wish I could develop a good attitude like so many of you have. I am so depressed so much of the time. My b/f is so critical of the way I eat, messy & large bites. I wear a size 3X. I am desperate for friends as I have none like me. Anyone willing to be friends with me on here? Please?

Ruby, we have so much in common - I can definitely sympathize!

I also suffer from depression and take medication for it. After trying diets for years, I finally gave in and had gastric bypass in late January. You can read about my experience on my blog HERE if you are unterested.

I'm not trying to talk you into this or anything - this was my decision, and it took me five years to make it. I just wanted you to know that I have been where you are, so I can sompletely sympethize (or would that be empathize?)

I could have never done a vegetarian diet - I HATE veggies, LOL! I am a carnivorous woman! Gimme steak (which I can't have either right now come to think of it, hmmmm). But about the only veggies I like are broccoli, salads, and things you fry! Not very helpful.

The low-carb diets worked better for me, because I was such a carbaholic, especially chocolate! Once I ate something sweet, my control was gone.

But there are many new and wonderful vegetarian cookbooks out there these days. And I know we have several vegetarians on the site, as well as a vegetarian section. And by not going totally vegan - you have left yourslef with lots of options. Just keep checking in with us, and we'll cheer you on. (We might even get you on that exercise equipment - I just joined a gym last week, and my first day is tomorrow, want to be my accountability buddy?)

Hang in there!
Michelle

Bella, thank you for your quick reply...It made me feel as if someone was actually listening & caring...I am not a candidate for bypass surgery cuz my insurance will not cover it. Also I have had Bipolar Disorder ( think Patty Duke) for most of my life, hence the depression & meds. I will have to get this done on my own and I appreciate your suggestions. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated also. Once again, thank you. Lindy

I'm vegan - have been for over 30 years. It sure hasn't helped my weight ) Of course I'd like it if you turned to veggie foods, it helps so many others and the environment if you do - BUT it's not what you eat, it's calorie counting that counts when losing weight. My weight has ballooned since I stopped being able to walk - excercise needed but can't do ( Now I know what depression feels like too, but I'm not going to let this damn disability get the better of me.

I'd be your friend no matter what size, height, colour, gender. Hell I'm not sizeist (nor any other 'ist' I can think of).
BIG HUG to you!

So sorry to respond to both of you....I have greatly appreciated your posts to me, but we have an insurancae lady coming today & that means vacuuming & dusting & hellzapoppin ! I tried diet pills once & they made me meaner than a snake...Also while I am on so many depression meds, I am afraid to mix in any other otc meds. I don't think going totally vegan is the answer for me either...I think I would get too stressed out trying to use all non animal products I just thought perhaps no meat would at least help. And then just today (come on admit it, yesterday too) I went to Taco Bell for 4 crunchy tacos...sigh...

I know how you feel about the OTC meds, especially diet pills! The thing a lot of these diet pills don't say is that they contain caffeine, which in the long run actually hurts your chance of losing weight. Sounds crazy, but because caffeine is a diuretic, the body thinks it is becoming dehydrated and starts haning onto all the water it can (and all the toxins along with it), so diet pills aren't all what they are cracked up to be any way.

Try to do small steps at a time.

Like week 1 cut out sodas and replace them with water (this could make the biggest difference, not only in weight, but in your skin and how you feel, too!)

week 2 - cut out simple sugars - sweets, if you have to have chocolate - go for dark chocolate ot has like 1/3 of the sugar or eat fruit

week 3 - replace all white carbs with wheat carbs

things like that - if you do it slowly, you're more likely to stick with it because it's a lifestyle change instead of a "DIET".

Also, always keep in mind that you shouldn't just take something away, because you'll think of that as depriving yourself. But replace it with something better; yeah you'll still miss the old bad stuff, but not nearly as much if you have something to take the place of it.

And this is something I have learned the hard way from gastric bypass - never, NEVER eat while doing something else! You eat twice as much if you are watching a movie, typing on the computer or reading a book as you do if you are sitting down to a table concentrating on your meal. I found out the hard way- because if I overeat, I vomit and hurt BAD. And the only times I do it are when I'm eating whil typing on this thing.

Well, I don`t drink sodas at all! Or VERY rarely. Like once in a few months! I have water, tea and coffe...
Secondly, I DON`T eat bread at all, or almost! For the last two years. I do buy bread on the events like... I bought a little bit of caviar two weeks ago, and I had to buy some bread just to have it with the caviar. Usually I don`t do it.
The only thing I still have a lot - the chocolate! But it`s also a natural antidepressant! With the absence of sodas and bread.. I though that one little thing is possible. I`m not eating it like over the top! Far not every day! I also do horse riding and biking... no help - I don`t loose any weight.
I also cut portion sizes but I feel hungry a lot of the times. Which is hard to endure for me.
That`s why I have found one way to deal with hunger - Hoodia!
