I have a 4 year old female parakeet who has laid her 1st eggs. She laid one 2 days ago, and then another last night. No boy bird in the picture. my concern is her getting egg bound or calcium deficient. She ignores the eggs, looks at them like they are creatures from another planet. I took the 1st one out after 24 hrs as she ignored it. Went to Petsmart and found 1 book that had little info about single hens . said to shorten her daylight hrs to 8-9 hrs a day. she has cuttlebone and eats Ecotrition food, treats and peas. Any suggestions? don't want to lose my little friend

Leave the eggs where she laid them & after she has 2 or 3 she may begin to sit on them. Once she has started laying them, she will probably continue until she has 5 or 6. She will probably sit on them until they would have hatched and then she will leave them. At that time you can remove them and shorten the daylight hours to prevent any more eggs.

Thanks, Mavis. I left the 2nd egg in her cage, and she played with it, but never sat on it, and acted like she didn't want it in the cage. She finally picked at it enough that she broke it, little brat!. i have shortened her daylight hrs, but she hasn't laid another one since..Maybe she is done. Back to her normal self,

That's what you call "being in the right place at the right time".

Great pictures!

Does anyone know a good resource for buying various size "fake" parrot eggs? I've looked through several sites in the supply area and can't seem to locate one (at least easily). The Nandays destroyed several of their eggs and I'd like to replace the next batch and incubate to avoid that in the future. (BTW I did manage to save 1 baby who's now 3 weeks old. He imitates the inflection in my voice when I talk to him ... am thinking he might try to be a talker!)

Scarlets are due any day now ...

Any help on the fake eggs would be appreciated!

Hi Denise, I've found a place that sells different sized fake eggs and also received a suggestion for you.

Quote:
can she determine if it is the male doing this? if so, she can remove him as soon as she see's the first egg. There is enough semen to keep the rest of the eggs feritle. she should sit and feed fine.
a lot less work that incubating and all those feedings!

anyway, found some here:

it's down with the nesting supply.

Thank you!!!!

I hear ya' on the feedings. I've been sleep deprived for awhile now and starting to fall apart - I'm just not used to this kind of schedule any more. (I didn't used to feel old ... that's not the case right now!)

I might try pulling the male. There are so many factors to consider since this is a new breeding situation for them. I would just hate to lose the entire clutch again if it's not the male. My thinking is to change their setup and substitute all but one fertile egg (next clutch) and see how that goes. If I have a successful parent hatch of that egg I'll leave two and so on incrementally as long as they continue to be successful. It will be painful short term since I'll have the rest of the clutch to incubate and hatch, but long term it should work out and allow me to really figure out what their issue is and whether it's setup related since the previous owner didn't give me any indication of prior issues.

(Of course I'm sleep-dep'd so if my logic is off PLEASE say so!!!)

Still waiting on those Scarlets with fingers crossed....

Oh yes ... and on the flip side... one of my Muscovy Ducks managed to have a secret nest (at least it was secret long enough we knew we couldn't safely pull the eggs for consumption purposes) and today she paraded all 20 (yes 2-0) babies around the yard for our inspection! That's a few more than we normally have to find homes for so we've got our work cut out for us.

That may be a good plan Denise. Yes, you're going to do without much sleep for awhile, but if they successfully raise one baby, you know it will be a temporary loss of sleep.

I've never handfed anything as large as a Nanday, but with the Cockatiels, Lovebirds & Budgies, I didn't get up during the night after the first 2 weeks. I found I would be waking them up & that didn't seem to make sense to me, so I let them sleep through the night & I did too.

Good luck with the Scarlets. Be sure to take lots of pictures (which I hope you're already doing with the Nanday).

I'll bet those little ducklings are adorable too! At least you don't have to worry about handfeeding them.
