I was taken by a publishing house and a vanity publisher. My advice to anyone considering self-publishing is do your research and examine their business practice very closely.

This is a very disturbing and scary thing to have happen to anyone. Please, I beg you. Be very careful, check, check and recheck every fact you can about the publishing house you choose.

One of the first things I tell people is to stay away from publishers that offer to make your dreams come true. Yes, we all have the dream of writing and being published, however, this is an easy hook to convince you that you must pay money, and in most cases, big money, to get your work published.
