I am planning to write an article on hyperlexia for the reading site. Does anyone have any books/information that they feel will be valuable to the article.

I am aware that some people do not feel that hyperlexia should be classified as an autism spectrum disorder. I'm just having trouble finding much information on the topic, I want to leave no stone unturned.

My 2 yr old daughter is hyperlexic and has been since about 18 months old, although she was reading numbers at 1 yr old. She started reading books at 2 yr 5 days. She is now almost 3, and reads very complex words and is beginning to decode. Riley's Autism Center in Indianapolis recommended a book called Building Bridges and I have also read Reading Too Soon by Susan Martins Miller, The Hyperlexia Handbook: A Guide to Intervention and Strategies by the American Hyperlexia Association, and Hyperlexia: Therapy that Works A Guide for Parents and Teachers by the Center for Speech and Language Disorders.
The Center For Speech and Language Disorders is a great resource for info and is located in Elmhurst, IL their phone number is 630-530-8551 and their email is info@csld.com.

This is a sore subject for many parents of hyperlexic children. Many doctors don't recognize it as a disorder or label the child with the horrible phrase "idiot savant" (I absolutely hate that phrase). Riley's Autism Center in Indianapolis, IN recognizes it as a disorder but as a subset of Autism.

My email is goodandplenty69again@yahoo.com and I'd be happy to help you out as muuch as possible. I am the single parent of 4 daughters, two of which are autistic, one with hyperlexia and one with dyslexia.

Hi Christina and welcome to the site. Thanks for posting and sharing about your girls. Feel free to respond to any posts here, no matter when they were started.

Any information helps out other parents searching the net. Plus today is the first day of Autism Awareness Month.

Thanks Bonnie, I really like this site and have found that the internet is a wonderful resource for info. Sometimes you have to dig, but it's there. I also have a list of great sites for free PECS including sign language PECS that I have found and I also have some suggestions on modifying the PECS program for easier use. Conventional PECS did not work for us, my daughter did not like the idea of trading her picture with the word on it for the object, so I modified the program a little and it worked great. I also have made some sensory books for my girls that work out pretty good, both have major sensory issues, and they have learned to tolerate many more textures this way. I will look at the autism forum next and look around the site a little more, but if anyone needs any help with these programs, I will be more than happy to help out.

I found a great website dealing solely with hyperlexia and is founded and run by parents of hyperlexic children. The forum is great and they can give you some ideas.

Here is the link to the website:
