Hi everyone, I am hand feeding a gouldian finch who is now 10 days old. The mother hatched 4 chicks, but didn't feed them. I have since lost 3 of them :-( I noticed a 'clicking' sound coming from them, and I went on line to research this. I read an article on hand feeding, at first I thought it was 'Air Sac Mites', but in the article they talked about 'Aspiration', if the hand feeding formula is too runny, it can get into their lungs. The one remaining is getting bigger, where as the other 3 got smaller, and eventually died :-(. I have hand fed 2 gouldians last year, and they are now 8 months old, both girls, and I followed the same routine as I did with them. I read where there is nothing that can be done for Aspiration???
I feed every hour or 2 hours, I used to be able to tell when the food crop was getting empty, but with this one the food crop looks 'Puffy', and it has a good appetite, and I make sure I feed small amounts, let it breathe, (as I know they don't breath when eating.) then if it wants more it will latch onto the syringe. I could really use some advise!! This one is growing, and I am wondering will it get better?? Am I just prolonging its life?? But I can't just watch it die, I want so bad for this little one to be able to survive!!!! Any advise would really be appreciated!!! Thank You.
