How does one go about going back to their natural haircolour? I've coloured my hair for about 8 yrs. now and last year I tried highlights for the first time, so I just want to know what steps have to be taken to get back to my natural colour from top to bottom?

Here is an article I wrote about growing out gray hair. Maybe you will find some tips there.
Growing Out Gray Hair

Let me know your thoughts and any information that is NOT in the article. It may be a good idea to write and article just for growing out natural hair that is not gray. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hi Lynne,

Sorry, I'm just responding now, but I'm having the same problems as before with getting into the Forum, never mind logging on...I can't get into the site at home...

Actually, I don't have any gray hair...yet...lol

My question is how do I go about getting back to natural, but not because I have gray hair, but because it's a few different colours due to colouring and last summers' highlighting....My hair goes lighter in the summertime, but my roots are a medium brown, but when I colour it medium brown all over, after a few weeks it goes back to light brown with the highlights that never go away...

I see. I thought you wanted to grow out the color and get back to really natural hair.
There really isn't any way to keep the color in the ends indefinately except to keep applying semi-permanent color.

You could start using sunscreen on your hair and keeping it covered while in the sun so that your hair doesn't lighten.

Sorry, Lynne...I don't think I worded it right before...

What I want is to have my natural haircolour back...which is medium brown with a touch of red in it...after years of colouring and with these highlights from last summer, my hair is now medium brown at the roots and lighter everywhere else...I just wanted to know what steps I could take to make it all medium brown...I should say what easy and less damaging steps can I take to achieve this? I've heard it mentioned on here that you can strip the haircolour, but that doesn't sound too safe...lol

Stripping the haircolor wouldn't do you any good since the the color you don't want is lighter. The only thing you can do is apply a semi-permanent hair color or any hair color that is a stain only. This color often fades away and will have to be reapplied until the natural darker color grows all the way out.

thanks, Lynne I didn't think stripping would be any good for me, but I thought I would ask, since it's been mentioned..

Can you recommend any semi-permanent brands for me?

Hi Franny - what you'll prob need to do is go to a stylist and have a filler put on your hair then a temp color. The ends of your hair (the part you've colored)are very porous and wont hold color that's why the filler is put on first so the color will hold. Other than that just keep your hair trimmed up and eventually the processed hair will be gone. Good luck

Hi breezyblueeyez - sorry, but what is a filler? I've never heard of that...Is there another name for this?

Thanks,

Fillers are preparations that help to equalize porosity and deposit a base color - in other words they fill in the porous areas giving the new color something to attach to and helps produce a more uniform natural looking shade but this is best done in a salon by the pros. Best wishes
