Seems like everyone here is partial to the ADFs. But I have an African Clawed Frog (Peepers) who I like very much. I've had him for about a year now and (as frogs go) he's a nice little guy. I've had him for about a year, so he's teenager size. He was so tiny when I got him and the lady at the pet store actually suggested a small quart-sized container for him and his little friend. Well, I knew he would grow, so I opted for a 2 1/2 gallon tank. The other frog died soon after, but Peepers seemed healthy and survived. Now, after almost a year, I decided that he couldn't stay in that tank any longer. Yesterday I moved him to a ten gallon tank. He seems happy with the change and was croaking like crazy all last night. However, I worry that he was croaking to try to call a friend. I understand that these guys are much happier with another frog. I don't mind making the commitment of a second frog, but I worry about what might happen. If you've ever had one of these guys, they'll eat anything. I mean ANYTHING! Does anyone on this site have any experience introducing a tankmate to an ACF? Obviously I'd be looking for one of a similiar size/age. He's about two inches now. It's a ten gallon tank and there are no fish in the tank. Just a few silk plants, one medium-sized rock, and Peepers. And should I even try to get him a friend or should I leave well enough alone? I don't want another frog to lose an arm or leg due to Peepers' extreme/constant appetite. I would feel so bad. And personally, I would rather only have one frog. But if it makes Peepers happy. Any advice?

I would personally wait maybe 2 weeks and see if he still seems lonely. He may have just been thanking you for the bigger tank. If he still seems to be looking for a friend, then I would introduce his friend by putting the friend in the 2.5 and setting them side by side so they can see each other. Leave it like that for about an hour, then add the new friend and watch closely for as long as you can to make sure there will be no problems. Also, make sure you have plenty of hinding places. I have never had an ACF so please understand this advice is NOT based on experience.
Good Luck!

HI Katy. I would leave him alone. He seems perfectly healthy and his croaking is just instinctual. You're doing a great job! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Give us a picture of your set-up!

It's been awhile since he's been in his larger tank and he seems to be doing just fine by himself. I've decided to leave him be rather than tempt fate by adding another frog. I'm getting a digital camera (something that's better than the little camera on my cell phone) in a few weeks, so I'll try to take a picture then. But I decided to go for a simple set-up to leave him more room to jump and swim. He loves the extra space. And still croaks a lot---especially after I change his tank and after a feeding. Thanks for the advice!
