I changed my betta's tank water today. He's been peachy keen for a few weeks now (I've had him a little over a month), and suddenly I noticed just now his tail looks different- it looks almost like it was split right down the middle. I looked for pieces of fin in the tank thinking he somehow found a way to tear it on the silk plant or round glass stones, but I saw nothing.
Anyway, it definitely wasn't like this this morning. Does fin rot make such a difference that quickly? Is it possible for their tails to split?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Can you take a picture? If it's just split, I'm not sure, but that doesn't sound like fin rot. One of my bettas is a fin nipper (nips at his own fins) and occasionally it looks as though it's split. If that's the case, it's certainly not fatal as he's about 4 years-old now.

For now, I'd just change his water, put in a little aquarium salt and some Stress Coat. But if you could get a picture, that might help.

My camera's flash isn't working for some reason, but here's the best picture I could get.

It's not completely split, but it's weird because it happened in a few hours time somehow. That's why I wasn't sue if it was fin rot or not.

this isn't fin rot; split tails happen all the time with bettas. Just keep his water clean and he should be fine. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
