I heard something the other day that seemed like it might be an urban myth, but I was curious. A friend overdyed her hair a bit, and said that it was recommended that she wash her hair a few times with basic Dawn dish soap and it would fade some of the color out, even if she did it a few days later.
I haven't talked to her, so I don't know if it worked or not, has anyone else heard this?

I'm gonna say that's a huge urban myth.
I do know that most people who color their hair get some fade from washing, but I've known people who wish their hair didn't dye as dark, and washing it right away did nothing.

A shampoo or soap that is alkaline will cause color to fade. So, yes dish soap will remove a certain amount of color - depending on the condition of the hair and the PH of the dish soap. Thats why professional shampoos make a big thing about being ph balanced. They are on the acid side.

I don't believe that dish soap will help remove hair color. Especially if it's permanent. I use dish soap to strip my hair every now and then, but it's to remove build up. There's not much you can to to remove hair color. If you don't like it, in my experience, you just need to re-color or let it fade over time

I've never heard this before? I've never tried dish soap on my hair..I thought it would make it very dry..
I did hear that if you want your hair colour to be lighter you should use a deep conditioner right away...right after colouring it..don't know if this is true or not..

Franny, dish soap will make your hair very dry. That's another result of the alkalinity.
I wouldn't count on a deep conditioner helping to fade color because most of them help return the hair to its natural acid state, therefore locking in haircolor.
I have seen some fading occur if heat is used with 'some' conditioners.

the dish soap thing worked for me, nothihng too dramatic but it did and still is removing some color, but yea it does make yer hair super dry so if yer going to try it make sure you condition yer hair really well before and really well after, i use a 3min conditioner that i leave in for about 30mins after i wash my hair with the soap.

I would have to say that yes, it does. My sister is a hairstylist and several times has given bad color to our other sister and has told her to use dish soap to get it out. But, in agreement with what everyone else has been saying, it will seriously dry out your hair.
