Thanks Razibahmed!
I'm trying and I think it will be successful. It apparently has been dormant for some time, so it will take awhile to rebuild. I certainly thank you for your input!

Hi, FashionFiend!

And, will you be taking these skills into entrepreneurship in the near future, or are you already in business for yourself?

Hey ladies! I'm looking for women whose careers don't match what they thought when they were little. I'm doing a piece for a magazine and it's an easy interview and fun photo shoot. Only requirement is that you're in New York. any takers? email me: abbysher@yahoo.com

thanks!

Sharlene,

I'm very far from being in business my self. I have a liberal arts degree (History and Spanish lit) and literally fell into management consulting-strategy stuff.

Did that for four years after university, got poached by a start up that was an ethics and loss accumulating debacle, also not what the position was billed to me as! Now I am in internet/PR/advertising hybrid.

I'm thinking that growing my skill base will help assuage some of the nervousness about not having a long term direction.

I was thinking of doing the MBA thing, but I am not strong in the math that is pretty much required. Considering finding a more focused degree that lets me skip the quant of the MBA, but not sure how those programs are received.

If I could handle the numbers, would totally do economic policy-- I loved public finance and welfare policy class I took in university. I loved that my school's econ program never involved heavy stats.

How would you parlay that into working for yourself as a consultant. If you do what you love, it's a great career. Find out what the final requirements are and, meanwhile, do the basic consulting and try to figure out how to bring that to those who can do the most good. If you can work the numbers, surely, there must be some contractors out there interested in having your type of work done for them, leaving the actual execution to them?

Possibly have your consulting available online for registered users, that would allow for changing parameters?

Yes, the numbers seem to be the biggest hurdle. It could be just anxiety and the negative experience of the start up- they expected me to do number crunchy stats work full-time, and not even in Excel but a special stats application. My boyfriend used to work in investment banking and his job was pure number crunching and he didn't even have to use that stats application. . .

I think a good litmus test might be to do some MBA practice tests and see how I do on the math portions.

Excellent thought. Sometimes we pick up more than we thought just going through regular routines. Your brain may surprise you! I'll keep my abacus nearby in support of your quest!
