I am starting a new project, a baby sweater. Can anyone explain the gauge.

It reads gauge: 14st/18 r = 3"

also increase 5 stitches evenly (72 stitches); I don't quite understand how this is done.

Will appreciate your help. <img src="/images/graemlins/beamedup.gif" alt="" />

14 stitches = 3 inches
18 rows = 3 inches

On the increase row I am going to assume that you started out the row with 67 stitches. What it means by increase 5 stitches evenly, you would divide 5 into 67 = 13.4 , you need to increase every 13th stitch and yes you will have a few extra stitches (2) because it could not be divided evenly.

Does that help ?

If you increase one stitch in your 5th stitch, 19th stitch, 35th stitch, 49th stitch, and 63rd stitch - that should give you 5 stitches, pretty evenly divided.

Re: Gauge - Cast on 14 stitches. Knit for 18 rows (Knit one row, purl one row). When you are done, it should measure three inches square.
Hope this helps

What happens if my number of stitches per inches does not measure to the number of stitches on the gauge.

Can anything be done?

If the gauge does not measure out for you, try changing the size of your needles. And make sure you are using the type of yarn the pattern calls for.
Hope this helps.

I am using the yarn that is suggested on the pattern and also the needle size.

Hope it works.

Thanks

I'll chime in, too.

If you're using the recommended yarn and needles, you'll probably be pretty close on gauge. Don't forget if you're doing a pattern to do your swatch in pattern. And don't skimp on the swatch. Not only will your gauge change the further you get away from your cast-on edge, but you may knit either tighter or looser as you relax into your knitting (I, for example, knit much looser as I go, so I have to do pretty big swatches to get a good read on gauge.)

Hope all that helps!
