There are hundreds if not thousands of herbal supplements in common use today. My article, Popular Herbal Supplements and their Uses, listed some of the most common ones, especially among women.

But what do YOU use?

I use huge amounts of cayenne, ginger, garlic and grapeseed oil in my cooking (I think it's sad when people use perfectly delicious Extra-Virgin Olive Oil for hot cooking.... the heat ruins the flavor and it has such a low smoke point that it doesn't allow much room for error and stuff gets burned a lot... its the best for dressings and seasoning, though).

I take milk thistle every time I have more than a couple drinks (which is relatively frequently... at least once a week). It is a GREAT way to help prevent hangovers (along with at least one bottle of water per drink, of course).

I chew licorice root (and also osha root) when I have a sore throat or a cold is coming on.

I drink green tea, chamomile tea, and rooibos tea frequently.

I don't use echinacea, though... it's a member of the ragweed family, and for people with ragweed allergies (which is like 40% of people), it can actually make colds WORSE and immune functions LOWER.

HI, I take Echinacea on the first sign of a cold & it has helped me all the time . I also take vitimins & herbs. I take a lot of naturals things like mustard seeds for pain. It nice to hear other people take naturals things instead of DRUGS .. Shrabar [color:"green"] [/color] <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Hi there, I take a OLAY multivitamin, Nature Made fish oil, and the OLAY Daily Total Effects pack to prevent aging- it has these little individual bags with the vitamins already sorted for daily use. They have:

CoQ10 that releases energy from carbohydrates and lipids to cells to fight radicals

Alpha Lipoic Acid with Green Tea extract that helps prevent puffiness

Vitamin E antioxident to nourish and smooth the skin.

I like the packs because that way i'm not over-doing my intake. Hope that helps! good discussion!

I love my herbs. In addition to being a food writer, I am also an herbalist. I think this is a great thread because everyone has different things that work for them. Here are my favorites. I prefer to take these as a tea or tincture. I believe that your tastebuds tell you a lot about how you are going to react to an herb and by taking a capsule, you remove your intuition from the equation.

Stinging Nettle- overall health, adrenal glands, nutritive
Oatstraw- great nerve food, calming, nutritive
Horsetail- silica content helps skin, hair, bones, teeth, nails...
Lemon Balm- calming
Peppermint- energizing and great for the stomach and sinuses
Chamomile- great for a full and upset stimach. Excellent for the nerves
Skullcap- my favorite sleep inducer
Chickweed- I like to pick this outside and put it in my salad. tastes like spinach, only milder. this is calming and is used for weight control.
Dandelion- great early spring food. I pick it outside and eat it raw. when the flowers bloom, I fritter them and eat it with ketchup.

The rhizomes of ginger (Zingiber officinalis) have been used since antiquity for their ability to support digestive and assimilative functions and to counter occasional mild nausea that can occur, for example, due to motion. Planetary Formulas Full Spectrum Ginger Extract combines an extract concentrated to 5% gingerols with pure, cultivated ginger root, insuring that all important compounds of ginger are captured, for a broad range of ginger activity.

I am not diabetic, but I do have peripheral neuropathy, so take Alpha lipoic acid, evening primrose oil, injectable b-12 along with the usual daily vitamins: C, B complex, E.
Being vegan, it makes buying any supplements more expensive, but well worth it for me.

For occasional sleepless nights, I take one valerian and one hops. Works great and I get no negative side effects or addiction. I have done this for over 10 years, and like I said, only use occasionally which on average is about once every few months. I take 2 grape-seed extract caps with my multiple because it helps me with eczema by reducing the itchiness, and allows my skin to heal without constant corizone cream use. Grape-seed also has many other positive benefits.
