BREATHE, hehehehe. Ok What I mean by that is if you look at your chain you will see one side that actually looks like either a braid or links and on the other side you will see a sort of bumb. Does that help ?

You are not a lost cause Not every row will be the exact same, especially if you are going to be increasing or decreasing. Do you have a specific pattern you are trying to tackle ? Please tell me the name of the book/pattern and I will walk you thru it step by step Don't give up, you can do it.

Let me add to Eva's post about not giving up. Even after you have been crocheting for a long time you will run across something that completely stumps you, frustrates you and makes you want to throw the whole mess into the garbage. Don't give up! When you feel yourself geeting frustrated, put it away for awhile. A lot of times when something has really frustrated me, it is all crystal clear after I've been away from it for awhile. Some of my most beautiful afghans have been the end product of a very frustrating beginning!

i have woken up in the middle of the night, sat straight up in bed and said "I got it!" and have to run to my chair and pick up whatever pattern is giving me fits and try it. Keep trying you'll get it. and there are lots of us here to help.
