I think American kid's are way spoiled and tend to be very annoying. But it's the parents fault for giving the kid every darn thing they want and then expect them to act like angels.

I know of a few couples that really have good kids and it's because they taught them respect, and didnt spoil them rotton. I hate it when I see a kid be like "I want I want I want" and then scream their head off if the parent actually says "No" there are ways to prevent that and American parents dont always "get it"

I, too, find that kids in general are bratty and entitlement-minded, same goes for their parents. Keep in mind, I DO see well-mannered, nice kids and good parents but they are few and far between. When did all of this happen? I was born in 1966 and I know the parents of my friends era would never put up with the [censored] parents do today.

If I or my brother had acted like that when we were kids, we would have been killed!

Same here!

And if I started acting up, all my mom had to do was tell me that I was acting like a brat and people were looking at me, and I got embarrassed and stopped whatever I was doing.
That's one thing I think parents don't know how to do anymore -- instill the fear of embarrassment in their kids. Of course they're obviously incapable of being embarrassed themselves, so it's no surprise!

...Could i just point out a glaringly obvious thing that most people seem to have missed....,
Whether they're there or not, ultimately, it's adults who are responsible for the way children behave, in public. So if a kid loses it or throws a wobbly, or has a tantrum or vandalises the place, you have to wonder on parental - that's ADULT - control.
If the kids are out of control, it's because the parents aren't exercising it adequately. So if the kids misbehave, look to the parents.

Children are minors, and get all the lessons they need from us. And when they hear the calibre of language on the TV, and hear their parents bawling each other out, or witness adults with road rage or any type of anger...it goes into their little heads and stays there. If grown-ups do it, Hey!! Why can't they??
If you want to bring children up as responsible members of society, try acting like one.

I cant tell you how often I wish for child-free environments. <img src="/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> Oh I dare to dreamFor restaurants without screaming midgets running a muck, commercial flights that allow you to put the little noisemaker in the overhead, and adult only movie theaters minus the smut.

......I sometimes think that if prospective parents were just presented with the simple truth that it takes approximately 40,000 (that would be about $80,000) to raise a child, it would act as a great cotraceptive....!!

I think it's important to reinforce that is, indeed, parents and other role models that form the way a child behaves, acts, etc. There are certain times that kids will be kids, and everyone should have a certain threshold for that (after all, we all started out there and I'm sure we all weren't perfect angels)...but after that we need to raise expectations for what's appropriate in public...

Here's a story for you on unruly kids and parents in public.

DH and I were enjoying a meal at the local Denny's restaurant/diner. My server looked distressed, so I asked her if everything was okay. She told me what happened: across the restaurant, some very rude children and parents had given her the runaround. The child both defecated and vomited on the seats/table; the parents did not help clean it up, did not pay for their food, did not tip the server, and were rude to the server before they left.

I felt so bad for this server...I gave her an extra-large tip when we left to make up for the awful night she'd had.

I was and still am in utter disbelief that people do things like this. How barbaric!
