Jaga, Is Nov 11th celebrated in Poland? If so how is it celebrated? I am supposed to put together a small reception for the Polish detatchment here. Thanks PS I did check the Polish Culture site but couldn't find anything about it there - I probably didn't look in the right places!

Yes, it is celebrated and very formally too. Academies, speaches, special TV and radio broadcast, national flags on official and private buildings. Make it as formal as you can! Still - laughing and humour during the reception should be encouraged
Added in edit mode: oops, I'm not Jaga, sorry about my perhaps too quick answer

In Krakow it is considered patriotic to go to a mass, especially in the Wawel Cathedral.

I am not Jaga, either, but I found this statement somewhere on the 'net:
"On the 11th November we celebrate the Independence Day. This is our most important national holiday. On this day in 1918 Poland regained its independence after 123 years of being depended on the three invaders:Russia, Prussia and Austria."

Alas, my party budget is not large enough to fly everyone from Tampa to Krakow! I will be sure to ask for a (large) increase in budget for next year!

Alas, my party budget is not large enough to fly everyone from Tampa to Krakow! I will be sure to ask for a (large) increase in budget for next year! You want my advice? You don`t need to fly them to Krakow. It will be patriotic enough if you buy 2 or 3 bottles of expensive Polish vodka with a patriotic name on it e.g. Chopin, well... this....ehh.. what`s his name.... and other names too, and then you will all spend a patriotic evening, talking about old times and all our compatriots who gave their life for Poland to be free. PS. Remember, don`t buy Gorbatchev Vodka, it is not a Polish patriotic name!

Jerzy,
Should smalec be served with the vodka ?

Why not? When the guests are all so stoned that they are unaware of any dangers, smalec can be served to them. On the next day they can learn what they have eaten. I think they will be proud. Eating smalec, tripes (flaki), raw meat (tatar) is considered masculine/macho in Poland. The guests might feel as if they underwent certain initiation, passed some special rites to be accepted into the holy circle.
