Today we were in Museum of natural history in Idaho and they had a huge Colombian mammoths. They are hugem they are bigger in size even than African elephant and of course much bigger than European woolly mammoths.

It reminded me the sad story of the Polish aurochs (tur) that was completely extinct by XVII century.

there is a monument of the last auroch in village Jaktorow in Poland -- and also a soccer team by the same name

The most impressive display I have seen on Mammoth was in the Darmstadt museum of natural history. I suppose the crowning item was a full sized model of a small (adolescent?) mammoth. I was surprised at its reddish hair.

We find their bones frozen in the earth in Alaska on a fairly regular basis, and my Fairbanks neighbors gave me a piece of tusk (or it could be mastodon tusk). Siberia is the riches place to recover them, and they have been recovered fully frozen, flesh intact and there are stories of the Czars serving mammoth at dinners.

It is fascinating, and there is talk of a Japanese team trying to bring mammoths back to life from recovered DNA, much in the fashion of 'Jurassic Park'. I would like for them to succeed!

Kai

Many moons ago, my folks took us on a weeklong odysey to the
American Museum of Natural History in NY City.

John the Just, that is one of the most faboulous museums I have ever visited. A young boy wakes up in me there that doesn't want to go, even when the time is over!

A_dam,

You could spend a week there and still not see everything.

It is a great place. Highly recommended by A_dam and I for a visit. Known as a must see in NYC.
