This was also a big news in Poland:

http://science.monstersandcritics.com/ne...omer_Copernicus

Warsaw - A Polish anthropologist claims to have found the skull of the father of modern astronomy, Nicolas Copernicus (1473- 1543).

The apparent discovery was made in a cathedral in the Baltic Sea port town of Frombork, once a part of Royal Prussia.

Copernicus was named canon of the cathedral in 1497 at the same time as his uncle's appointment as a local bishop.

Anthropologist Professor Konrad Piasecki told Polish Radio Thursday the skull was found inside an unmarked tomb set in the floor near the cathedral's main altar.

A facial reconstruction made by the Warsaw-based Central Criminal Laboratory using the skull and computer animation has produced the face of a man around 70 years of age which bears a resemblance to a known portrait of Copernicus.

Scientists, however, admit it is impossible to make a positive identification without DNA tests and that such testing is in turn impossible as Copernicus had no known offspring.

A Polish astronomer, mathematician and economist, Copernicus is regarded as the father of modern astronomy for developing the heliocentric theory of the universe which posits the sun, rather than the earth, at its centre.

The astronomer from Torun, now in central Poland, shocked contemporaries by asserting the earth rotated on its axis once daily and travelled around the sun once yearly in his progressive 1530 publication 'De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres)'.

This is probably how Copernicus looked like at the end of his life.

How the scientics identified him? His age (unusual, he was 70 years old when he died) and broken nose

Forza

thank you for taking your time and scan the covers, especially the one with "we are sexy" . This image of Copernicus scull looks a bit similar to his real portrait - especially if you replace the gray hair with the dark ones.

The hero and patron of one of my hobbies. I think I will print the picture and paste it on my wall as a bit of inspiration.

So the first posting on this forum is Nov 3. Here it is Nov 6 and the first mention of this find is in the on-line version of NY Times www.nytimes.com

Who was surpridsed that the riots in France took so log to get to this forum, non-Polish riots at that, thus not in our area of interest?

Oops, Poles shouldn`t have revealed the skull to the world. The reconstructed face resembles that of the present Pope Benedykt, who is German. Look at those deep eyes. Nothing of Slavic features in the face.
It proves that Copernicus wasn`t Polish, he was German.
This should finally end the long-standing dispute between two nations.

Jerzy,
At last you wrote something I could disagree with. Copernicus was not German nor Polish. National identity is a concept starting to establish itself in Europe in mid 19th century. But I agree he has more Germanic then Slavonic face features.

Kai, nice evenings with clear skies are meant to be spent outside with my telescope and that is why I only posted today. For the past couple of days we have seen evening temptures rise in the Tidewater and I just can't let these nights go to waste.

Perhaps we should add Chopin for the French to this offer, his face isn't 'Polish' either. Or maybe we should consult Cesare Lombroso beforehand how Polish face should look
