I was wondering how many of you planted an amaryllis bulb for winter color? They are all over the place for really inexpensive prices. I have an affinity for all things miniature and ordered one from an on-line site; it is Baby Star and is supposed to be a reddish-orange with a white star-shaped center and only 16" tall. I wish it would start growing :-<

Share with us what you have planted. Maybe next year I will try one of them.

I have an amaryllis that spends its summers outside and soon I will bring it up from the basement so that we can enjoy it's blooms for Christmas. We only planted daffodills and alliums outside for this spring this year.

Connie, do you happen to know its name? If not, what color is it?
Thanks!

I am not sure of it's name, but it is solid red. They had some giant Amaryllis bulbs the other day and I thought about buying one. They were just loose in a container. What would I need to look for when chosing a bulb?

It shouldn't be shriveled - that would mean it is losing water and withering away. If the bulb is solid and has no bruising or moldy spots, it should work fine. It's pretty much like you would look for when buying an onion - since they are all in the same family.

Well, I passed on the jumbo bulbs. They were soft and some of them were squishy and they were $9 each. It would have been neat to see just how jumbo they got.

Connie, you did good! If you had bought one and planted it, it would have totally dissolved and you would have wasted $9.00. Watch for them next year and buy them early. By now, they have been sitting in the store for quite a while and it takes its toll on the health of the bulb. If they were sold pre-planted in a pot, they would be growing and not losing water or rotting - then again, they probably wouldn't have been watered, so you do have to be careful.

I purchased mine from an on-line nursery and it came preplanted. So far, it isn't showing any signs of growth. I have it on my desk at work so I am hoping, by Monday, there will be some green showing.

They just put these out. I guess if I really want one next year that I can order one on-line.

WOW!! What a rip-off! If the bulbs are soft and mushy, they are already rotting. I hope no one buys any.

I have an amaryllis planted from last year and it's just growing leaves again and I can just see the beginning of the bloom stalk starting to pop out. I just purchased two more yesterday for 4 dollars each, but I had to rifle through about ten boxes before I found two that were healthy...an pink one and another red...they are beautiful plants...My mother is positivly addicted to growing these and has about 25 plants currently and always shopping for more...
