You have the impertinence to doubt my words, just because I said I went to a bankiet in Krakow and lard was served there! It was sitting in a pot in front of me and I asked my neighbours on both sides about it. They gave the same story about it, that it was smalec and where it came from and how it should be eaten - I was almost sick!
So now I am very offended by your unbelieving attitude. And Adam needn't laugh - I saw the same **** at a bankiet in Warszawa also!!

Le sujet est termine.

Aaaah, now it is clear. It was smalec, which is quite delicious, but only when eaten with good home-made bread from an old recipe.
I believe you now.
I just couldn`t imagine anybody munching on a big piece of original, not cooked, lard. Especially a director or executive. It is disgusting. It reminds me of Hannibal Lecter.

PS. Adam wasn`t laughing at you, but at me.

Thank you for your apology, albeit somewhat disguised! Smalec or not, they were still potfuls of lard!
Naturellement nous sommes encore des amis, n'est-ce pas et il serait un plaisir de faire votre connaissance quand je fais une visite encore a Krakow. Ca va?

It's not only the Siberians who eat a lot of lard. When in Poland /------/

Leslie, before you start feeling offended by a little bit of disbelief towards your words please check what you've written and don't be too astonished with disbelief if you start implying that this something you are writing about is eaten in Poland as often as in Siberia (where minus twenty Celsius is mild winter)
Leslie, please allow me to laugh whenever I like, especially if I am laughing at myself too, not at you, no, no, no, under no circumstances, ever Get down your pedestal, please, you'll have some fun too! There's no need to use French here, nous ne parlons francais pas ici, nor German, Italian, Chineese. English and some Polish from time to time will be ok. And the last but not the least - please try to make Raytan come back to the forum again. No to trzymaj sie, stary!

Smalec? What is the surprise, and why is eating it any surprise to anyone on this forum? It is not just an arrival from Siberia. The Germans eat Schmalzbrot, bread with lard spread on it. The Slovaks go a step farther and will stick a cube of pork fat (bacon without meat) on a stick over a campfire and roast it, catching the dripping fat on bread and eating it. That is similar to Americans roasting marshmallows, or puffs of sugar over a fire.

Are we talking two different things here or have you never heard of this?

Kai
PS More on topic, it is snowing outside.

I have heard about smalec, eaten it, like it. Still - it not so popular everyday dish in Poland nowadays. In contrast to people living in Siberia and other cold regions of the globe, I suppose. How about Alaska? Do you eat a lot of smalec or it's not that cold there? The surprise was re: its eaten in Central Europe as often as in Siberia. Hope this helps

Why should I get Raytan to return when I have you to battle with!!!! He just seems to have disappeared - too busy, lost interest, couldn't stand the heat????

ps French is more my native language than English as I was brought up in my formative years (?) by my French maternal grandmother
