in 1987. At that time pizza was warm toast topped with ketchup and grated cheese!............

Your friend describes zapiekanka and calls it pizza. The history of Poland in fast-food looks like that:
in 70ties - no fast food in the US meaning ---> no stands with food, no bars, no pizza houses. There were 'Bar mleczny', a place were pierogi, nalesniki, 'milk soups' etc was served. Pity it's gone now, was quie unique, one could drop in and order a glass of hot milk for instance.
In 1980-1981 - first Solidarnosc period. The rapid groth of first fast-foods in Poland, the birth of zapiekanka, sold in the street stands .
13 december 1981-june 1989 - the free enterprise was inhibited by the martial law, nonetheless the fast-foods surivived. Zapiekanka industry grows in strenght.

1989 - all kinds of fast-foods available, zapiekanka holds on in very good shape, evolves into more sophisticated forms.

Additional 'did you know'info. Do you know that pizza is a kind of dish POPULARIZED, not invented, by the Italian diaspora? In Poland we've had a very old dish called PODPLOMYK which is basiclly pizza cake served with some souce, meat etc.

A_dam, I really like your short history of Polish fast food. Then we should add a new era to it: Chinese and kebab stuff.

zooba,

Elaborate on Polish ketchup a bit. Do you mean ketchup made in Poland or a product that is uniquely Polish?

Ketchup made in Poland, I mean. I have tried the American ones and they seemed to be packed with some preservatives, you could taste artificial flavors. I can't explain. And the American ones were too sour for me or too hot. Perhaps it the matter of my personal preferences for quite delicate flavors. But I must admit there is also terrible ketchup made in Poland, almost transparent for the lack of tomatoes inside, yuk (bleeee).

Zooba,

I praised the Czech catsup (that is what my Word spell checker says is correct!) to my American sister and she jumped on me for being un-patriotic. I guess my taste buds are skewed as well. I like the subtle spices and ... maybe it is sugar in the Ami catsup, I don't know. I will eat the stuff nowadays as well, but did stay away from it for decades. Then I tried Czech catsup and started to use the Ami stuff as well..

Some of us slip into bad habits over time. Now I will have to go to Poland to try the ketchup!
