I know I already posted about this, but the talk about Roe v. Wade possibly being overturned got me worried about potential restrictions on vasectomies.
Right now, I'm a single 24-year-old guy. Yeah, I know this forum is for people who are already married and don't have kids, but I already consider myself part of this group because I've decided this is the lifestyle for me.
Anyway, I'm concerned that by the time I do find Ms. Right and I go in to get a vasectomy, it'll be illegal or very difficult to get one. The other option is to do it within the next year or so, but I'm worried that if I'm still single, the doctor will refuse because I'm a young single guy who isn't mature enough. Which is not true, because I consider myself much more mature than the average 24-year-old, and I don't think I should be denied just based on my age alone.
The other issue is my family, who assumes I'll have kids. I'm thinking of saying I won't have kids, but WITHOUT telling them I plan to get a vasectomy.
What do you think of all of this? Any advice for me?

Hi Happy Guy,
If I were you I would go ahead and get the vasectomy. Since you have already decided that your future will be CF....Mrs. Right will obviously feel the same way. As for telling your family, I don't see why you have to tell your family anything about what you choose to do with your private area. Eventually, you may just want to tell them you don't plan to have children.

The tricky part is whether they'll give me one even if I'm single and only in my 20s, because unless the doctor is very understanding, I'm afraid he or she will impose their beliefs on me.

Getting "fixed" has nothing to do with the abortion issue except perhaps for very conservative Catholics.
Besides that, all the hooplah about Roe vs. Wade being overturned is blown waaaaay out of proportion. Knee jerk reaction by liberals to someone who disagrees with their views.

Though abortion and vasectomies are different, the issues potentially involve control over reproduction. That's my concern.

I agree with you. With the way this country is going I too fear what may happen with our reproductive lives. If they over turn Roe V Wade, if more and more pharmacists stop giving out the pill/patch etc, catholic based hospitals are merging with non-faith based ones and making them stop giving out birth control and stopping sterilization. It's too scary to think about what could happen. With all the fmaily values and people like Bush who think everyone should have kids, nope too scary!
Get snipped now. Go call a urologist and get in to talk with them. Go in prepared to fight. Bring paperwork with you that has lots of replies to their questions. Go in knowing about how it's done, why you want it done, that you'll go to another Dr who will do it if they don't.
DH and I went in ready to fight. The guy said you know this is forever? We said yes. He said ok and scheduled the appt. I was almost upset we didn't get to fight! hee hee!
I know many men who have been snipped young. Some as young as 22. And they were single at the time.
Just when you call the urologist tell them your age and see what they say. Tell them you are 100% sure of your feelings and that you do not want to father a child. No matter what happens in the rest of your life. Just be confident.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I think I will officially do this in a few months when I have some money saved.
I know that after the procedure, there has to be a sperm count check after some time, because several ejaculations are needed to clear the passage of sperm. How much time is there between the procedure and the follow-up visit to check the sperm count?

I would get the vasectomy if you want it.
However, I wouldn't fear too much for a ban on them in the hear future. The attack on Roe is an attack on women, to put them 'in their places.' It is entirely permissable for a fundie male to have his twelve kids then get snipped. But it is not alright for a woman to exercise any sort of control over her fertility.

They may not ban vasectomies but they will try to make sure you can't get them before 35 and without having kids first. It's very risky when you're CF.
As for the wait, Dh's urologist told him in six weeks check, then wait another week and check. Some say 3 months. Some say just after 20 ejaculations. So if you can do it 20 days (after the first two weeks of doing nothing,) then more power to you.
DH's suggestions to those going through it get some snug tighty whiteys and wear them over your jock strap for two FULL weeks. Trust him, it helps a lot!

I agree with the posters before me...I would definitely go in for a vasectomy. If the doctor won't do it, keep going until you find someone who will. I am not much older than you, (25) but I don't believe either of us is too young to know what we want from life....and kids are NOT a part of it! LOL I really wished my husband and I had discussed this more first....he wants kids one day, and I know I don't. When you find your Ms. Right, she will understand and accept your decision, (if she truly is your Ms. Right.)
