The father of one of my non-English-speaking friends in Poland has died. I plan to send a sympathy card and message. I am hoping that Jaga or our forum friends in Poland can tell me if there are any specific, traditional, words of comfort that are used in this situation (and how to write them in Polish). I have to write notes like this all the time (it seems)to US friends, but I don't know the Polish traditions.

dziekuje,
Nancy

Nancy,

I think the way how people do it in Poland is similar to the USA.

As for the phrase it should be

Wyrazam glebokie wyrazy wspolczucia z powodu smierci...

This is the simplest - maybe our friends from Poland (probably not earlier than Monday_ will help out with something more elaborate.

Here are some Polish cards with condolences:

Thanks, Jaga. What does the Polish phrase translate as?

I could not make that site work very well. Too many flashing pumpkins!!!

Maybe Jan - he had those nice valentine cards - ambermarket - can provide a card? I will have to check.

Nancy, if any flashing on the screen bothers you, you can turn it off with one press of the "esc" button. It sure helps with obnoxious adds!

other possibilities:

- laczymy sie w bolu po odejsciu... (name of a dead person)

- jestesmy z Wami w chwili zasniecia w Panu... (name of a dead person) => suitable if those who you comfort are the believers only.

your father:

Panskiego Ojca (if speaking to one person, formal relation, capitals important)

Panstwa Ojca (to more than one person)

Twojego Ojca (singular, unformal relation)

Waszego Ojca (plural, unformal relation)
