Update on the stapp situation....
The one who took over the shell, still has it and the original "Mom" has been relegated to a spot underneath the sponge filter...lol...poor girl was hiding out "IN" the sand !! She'd bury herself with only her eyes showing...so I took a shell from one of the others and stuck it under there for her. She seems a bit happier now...lol...
No fry..and I really don't think there are any anymore. The shell was full of sand for awhile before the other one actually went in and cleaned it out and moved in.
I think that the aggressor is another female. Perhaps she 'disturbed' the nest because if that female raised them that would maker her the "alpha" female. Just a guess on my part, I really have NO idea ! [imageBellaOnline ALERT: Raw URLs are not allowed in these forums for security reasons. Please use UBB code. Poor little mom...hiding in the sand. I bet it was funny to see just her little eyes though.
We used to raise birds and tried to colony breed parakeets. I had 10 pair and a bunch of extra nest boxes. They had constant squabbles and a female would come along and kick another couple out of their box and take over their eggs. Eventually we ended up using single cages for each pair. It was so much easier! As soon as you would take one pair out of the colony another one would take up the alpha pair position. In the end we didn't end up with a single clutch of parakeet babies out of the colony.

Lol about the hiding fish !
I had looked in the tank for her and couldn't find her anywhere....I started looking for a body..lol...but not even that.
I tossed some flakes in there, that ALWAYS brings them out, but after a minute or two, she still hadn't shown up. I was puzzled........but then.......all of a sudden....there she was !! I had NO idea where she had come from...she just appeared !
Lol...I watched her for a bit to see where she went, something startled her and she dove into the sand so fast I almost didn't see it happen ! I was amazed !

Well, I don't know what the heck has come over me....but I'm doing another blue ram spawn !
I set up a 10gallon fry tank and right now I have an unknown number of little swimmers in there.
Silly me <img src="/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

LOL...I think it would be great to have space to raise babies. While I was gone to my mom's this past weekend one of our platies had babies. There are 10 of the little babies. My son was so excited. I think the funnest thing will be to see what color they end up being.

Just an update on the ram fry.......they're doing very well..though I only have between 10 and 15 this time around. Lost a few in the beginning for some reason...but the ones that are left look very good.
Here's a few pics of them... [url=BellaOnline ALERT: For anti-spam reasons, we restrict the number of URLs allowed in a given post. You have exceeded our maximum number of URLs.

I thought that I should ressurect this thread.
I have 12 yellow labs in a 70g, 2 ruby red peacocks, 3 mystery peacocks and 7 cynotalapia afras in a 70g, 15 Yellow lab fry in a 10g and I picking up a trio of multis this weekend for another 10g.
I agree shellies are great cichlids if you don't have the space for a big tank. I love breeding the larger Africans as well. The yellow labs are moothbrooders and it is fascinating to watch.
I have no experience with Rams though and I was wondering if you could keep apair in a 10g? I got two empty 10g right now and there is nothing I hate more than an empty tank.
