...celebrating Polish-American Heritage. We all know that, thanks to Jaga's last newsletter (you did sign up, didn't you?)

I got to wondering what else is celebrated in October (in the USA) so I did a Google search and assembled this list from the first 10 pages:

Hispanic Heritage (Sep 15-Oct 15)
Italian American Heritage
Polish American Heritge

Adopt a Dog
Arts and Humanities
Breast Cancer Awareness
Black History
Clergy Appreciation
Children's Health
Crime Prevention
Cyber Security Awareness
Dental Hygiene
Disability Employment Awareness
Domestic Violence Awareness
Down Syndrome Awareness
Energy Awareness Month
Family History
Fair Trade
Medical Librarians
Virginia Wine
Window Covering Safety

Breast Cancer Awareness gets the most attention, at least in my part of the world.

Nancy,

I have in plan to write the article (very soon really, maybe this weekend) about the meaning of months and days in Polish calendar.

Our polish calendar is so unique!!!

October is "pazdziernik" in Polish. Who knows its meaning?

"Pazdziernik" comes from the word "pazdzierze", which are shives in English. I guess that just then the peasants did their threshing works on fields. That's my interpretation of the name.

Hi zooba,

I am not familiar with the word 'shives'.

Please elaborate.

Zooba might be refering to "sheaves" (plural of "sheaf").

Does Poland have all these "awareness" months as I listed in the first entry?
