My boyfriend and I are planning on getting tattoo's together. Nothing like our names, just something that only he and I know what it means. We are both in our mid 30's and have though long and hard about it. I am having trouble finding a site that I can easily navigate to try to find a tattoo...

Almost all tattoo (and web searches) work better when you have some sort of design idea in mind. If you search for some type of image as opposed to a looking for "a tattoo" you'll most likely find what you are looking for.

The American theory of getting a kanji tattoo so that no one can tell what it says is starting to fall apart. I live in a large city, and I know that many Asian people I walk past can read the kanji inked in my skin. So, if you really want something that no one else knows the meaning of, it would be best to choose something that isn't part of any written language.

You and your partner need to sit down and talk about what you want. Do you both agree on overall size and placement? What sort of feeling do you want this tattoo to express? What sort of things do both of you like?

You need to form your tattoo idea more concretely, as you'll find that people will suggest sites based on what they think might be good, and you may still find that all their suggestions don't bring you any closer to finding your perfect tattoo.

TO HELPPLEASE, MAKE SURE THIS IS WHAT YOU REALLY WANT. NOW I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST TATOOING, BUT YOU DID SAY HE WAS YOUR " BOYFRIEND"NOT HUSBAND AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT YOU SHOULD AT LEAST KNOW THAT HE'S STICKING AROUND FOR THE LONG HAUL NOW I'M NOT SAYING MARRIAGE THAT'S NOT FOR EVERYONE, BUT IF YOU DID BREAK UP AFTER YOU GOT THE TATTOO IT WOULD BE A PAINFUL REMINDER EVERYDAY, SO JUST MAKE SURE IT'S WHAT "YOU" WANT , HEY INSTEAD OF TATTOOES WHY NOT PIERCINGS YOU CAN GET THEM IN SOME INTERESTING AREAS AND THEY CAN EASILY BE REMOVED IF NEEDED . GOOD LUCK!

Paulajean,

I have a tattoo that I once got with a former boyfriend. It is a Mayan phoenetic glyph, as we wanted something that referred to that time in our lives and not just our relationship. We were involved for 2.5 years before parting ways.

It's now a good 15 years later and I have to say I still am very happy with that tattoo. It is in no way a painful reminder. It reminds me of a time when I was learning and growing a lot. It reminds me of a person who I had a lot of fun with and who introduced me to a lot of books and music and thought that I might otherwise have not known about.

You can't project your own perceptions onto other people and what skin art might mean to them. It's their own experience and learning process.

Yes, I get a ton of email from people who made a tattoo choice and later felt somewhat negative about it, but really, I think of it as a lesson the person would never have learned if they hadn't done it.

I am 38 and at a point in my life where I am simply enjoying my life as it is now. We are happy together now, and it took YEARS for me to be this happy, so it is a time that regardless of how it ends (or doesn't) I want to remember it. Happiness as I am feeling now doesn't come along that often. We have been together for 3 years and we both just want to have a permanant memory of how wonderful life for us is NOW. I appreciate all the feed back!

No worries...I just have decided to look at all sides of life these days. When you are happy, you need to do what you feel to hold on to it, even if it doesn't last, you can still always have a reminder of that moment where you were. Live in the NOW, the past is just that, and the future may hold more happiness or it may hold heartbreak....so NOW is the perfect time to celebrate what is good!

My husband and I have matching tattoos.... Ours are his family's Scottish clan crest, mine on my lower back and his on his arm. It is a thing that for me says that I will always appreciate the way his family has taken me in and made me a part of theirs, 100% and with no reservations. (I have a [censored] family background, and having a good one now is priceless to me)

I'm pretty against band tattoos, but maybe a song lyric that speaks to both of you? I know a girl who's got a Ms. PacMan and her boyfriend's got a PacMan tattoo. Its all about what, at a glance, will immediately remind you of how happy you are at this minute, with him. You could adapt a piece of at you saw together, a reminder of a particularly great day you spent together, some reminder of a silly ritual you do together.... A good artist can make Anything into a tattoo. Once you have an idea of what that might be, then start doing image searches... Google, Dogpile, Lycos are all great places to start searching.

Great idea, and I am happy that you get what I mean about being happy at the moment. To me anything that can bring a smile to one's face years down the road as a happy moment enters your psyche is well worth it regardless of what the final outcome is.

We are going to sit down and write out our favorite moments over the years and go from there. I am already getting really excited about this!
