ok, i have three female tiels all in the same cage. 2/3 are dropping eggs often. i always have to take the eggs out because they get violent with each other. now these birds are very tame. they're spoiled rotton even. everyday, and i mean EVERYDAY my lutino always does her little mating squeaking thing. it's getting rather annoying. so my question is, should i get both of them mates? i feel kinda bad that i keep taking away their eggs. would their parental skills not be very well because they're so tame?

this morning, my lutino had laid another egg. so out of curiousity i put the egg in a little nest thingy and put it in the cage. only to my amazement the grey tiel took over and sat on it. so i dont know. i never had planned to breed these birds. purely for companionship. but if it's in their best interest to find a mate, then that's what i'll do.

Its a good idea to let them sit on the eggs for the full period that they would if the eggs were fertile. If putting up the nest box gives them a chance to do that, I would leave it for them. When you take the eggs away, she will just keep laying them and become exhausted & very low in calcium.

Very tame birds often do not make good parents, so getting mates for them may just mean that you will have more birds and more eggs - that may or may not be fertile.

but they are still in the same cage. this means i would still have to get separate cages for them, because i can't let them stay together. they get pretty violent with each other. and i don't like to stress my grey tiel because she seizures. and my lutino thinks she's such a badass. she's so dominant it's not even funny.

If the cage is large enough, you could put 2 nests on opposite sides where they could each have their own space. The act of sitting on the eggs for the full incubation period is really important. She is able to relax & build herself up & will stop laying after about 6 eggs - at least until after she deserts the clutch. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
