Sometimes, I wish people would just keep their anti-CF thoughts to themselves as I don't tell them about how I feel about their lifestyle choice. Can you imagine how it would be if we turned the tables and decided to make a tactless statement everytime someone we knew had a child or decided to have children. They wouldn't like it too much, but they would see how we feel.

So very true, freespirit, maybe we should have a "counter attack day" the next time we get challenged. We'll just say the most inappropriate thing about being a parent to see how they like it.

hypothetical conversation:
parent-do you have children
cf-no, and don't want them
parent-you'll change your mind
cf-and you could change your mind too
parent-do you not like children
cf-do you like your children
parent-not having children is selfish
cf-it is more selfish to have children

I know it looks kind of childish, but you all get my point

Exactly..
I think what they miss most is when they were single and had the choice to do whatever, whenever...
Now all that's gone - reality time.
And even worse are the ones trying to do it all - kids, chores, work, me time [?]
Funny how that wasn't thought of before the parenthood choice was made.

If you choose to be a parent , your complaints are going to mean that much less...

This discussion reminds me of a couple things about my parents and myself.

My dad has a close friend since college who got married and he and his wife never had kids. I've never heard the friend or his wife discuss it since I've met them only a few times, but I've always known that my dad and mom think he's a bit "off" because he has no children. Dear dear, what will they think of their own daughter?

Another thing I remember is when I was pretty young (one of those "kids") I went with my parents to some bridal shower (or at least my mom went with me and my sister) and I remember later my parents were talking about the woman who was getting married. Apparently she didn't want to have children and didn't particularly like them and my parents thought she was a [censored] nonetheless because of it. I remember feeling that was kind of harsh even when I was young. Now that I think about it I feel sorry for that woman, not b/c she didn't want children (of course not guys) but b/c she had to put up with her friend's kids being at her bridal party!

Anyway, I don't relish in all the flack I'm going to be getting from my parents when I'm a bit older and the "baby" question comes into play.

It's all in the reflexes.

it is a hot topic because society has placed this supposeded normalcy that the american dream is to get married and have children and anything that does not fit that mold is considered abnormal.

This is also true, rather more so in traditional socities such as India.

another thing that gets me [censored], is that because I don't have a child, I am not respected as those who do.
