Is anyone watching this series? Leslie? If so do you have an explaination for why the RF planes are flying with Polish insignia? So far none of the pilots has been Polish (although several of the actors have fathers and grandfathers who were Polish flyers in the RF). Just wondering. BTW ny series with an actor names Honeysuckle Weeks is alright by me.

Sorry Chris - we do have this series in UK, but I haven't been watching recently. There were a number of Polish Squadrons flying in UK during the war - it may have been later in the war that these were given the right to have the Polish insignia. There were a lot of Polish pilots who flew in the Battle of Britain, but their planes had the RAF insignia. If I come across anything connected with this, I'll let you know.

So far, the most definitive book on the 1000s of Polish pilots who flew in the RAF was written by Lynne Olson and Stanley Cloud. A Question of Honor, The Kosciuszko Squadron follows a squadron of Polish flyers during the war. Their pivotal and decisive contribution during the Battle of Britain (Churchill in his memoirs credits them with turning the tide), and what happens to the survivors at the end of the war, and the betrayal at the hands of Stalin. They are attributed with about 20% of all Luftwaffe losses during the battle of Britain.

A fantastic book, with moving photos, it is a must read for those interested in Polish History during WWll, albeit from a different shore. I bought it online, and is a book I will read again.

I sought the experience of a friend of mine who is an expert in all things aeronautical - below is his answer:

"As far as I can find out no Polish Sqadrons flew with JUST the Polish insignia. Like you said they all had RAF roundels and the Polish back and white squares on the front of the fuselage. I'll do some more research, but I'm fairly sure that was the case.
I've watched all of Foyle's War and all the aircraft had both RAF and Polish markings."

Was the additional insignia what you were talking about?

Pozdrawiam

Leslie

Leslie,
I should have been more clear in my first post. The RAF unit being depicted in the show is clearly a British RAF unit with Brit pilots. However, the planes have the RAF roundels and the red and white squares on the nose just behind the propeller. The pilots are not Polish. The other thing is that the episode in which we noticed the markings was set quite early in the war. It is not a big deal just a curiosity.
