I've been kind of peeking into y'alls forum from time to time (because they ALWAYS have something going!), but I have no knowledge whatsoever about this stuff.

I like doing "crafty" things - I just tried sewing my daughter's Easter dress last year (with LOTS of my MOL's help- bless her patience.). I'll always try something.

But I'm curious; (don't throw things at me) what IS the difference between crochet and knitting?

That is a good question Crochet is done with one hook and knitting is done with 2 needles. And I am going to let the others point out more of the differences....Ok ?

I agree that the glad comercial is very not very nice. One shouldn't have to resort to insults to sell a product. I am no longer buying glad products. Oh I know one little person in a big world but I protest.

What is the difference between knitting and crochet. Well, I always find that I have to use more yarn to crochet something then to knit it. A crocheted piece is always much more firm and thick then a knitted piece I have done (talking here about ghans). It is easier to crochet things like doilies, hats, mittens in the round then it is to use all those double points to make them or circular needles, but I think beaded knitting is much easier then beaded crochet.

There is usually more stretch to a knitted piece then there is to a crocheted piece. The stitches for knitting are formed on the needle, while the stitches for crochet are formed by the hook within the work in progress starting with a chain base. It is easier to fix a mistake in crochet then in knitting, but both are fixable.

The main difference is the tools and the look of the finished product. They both use yarns (and other materials), a tool, and you get a "something" hand made.

I know there are "snobs" when it comes down to if you knit or crochet but there is also a break in the knitting community when it comes to needle knitting and machine knitting. Then there is the yarn part of the snobbery. Now with loom knitting going strong there are many comments being made about that also.

It is all fun and I like them all. So it is the snobs loss in a possible enjoyment, not mine.

I would stop buying glade products but i really like those trash bags that stretch......I need to get out more

once again, though, that was an insulting commercial. Take it from someone who was called "old lady" as a kid because I liked to crochet.

The commercial does at least feature crochet, I really wish that it didn't make the general public feel that crocheting (or knitting) is only about little old ladies making air freshener covers, tp covers, etc.

I crochet and knit (learned to knit about a year ago, crochet is still much faster/easier for me) and I know what you mean about knit snobs shouldn't be such a big difference, both techniques are hooks, string and air, but some people don't feel that way.

I saw this commercial for the first time last week (I don't turn on the t.v. much as you can tell.)
We need to all get together and write the Glade people and ask for the air freshner cozy pattern (ha ha) We can all include a picture of ourselves to let them know that the young crochet as well.
Can you imagine them opening letter after letter asking for that cute little pattern on their commercial.

Again I am not bothered by the commercial at all but I do have an idea if it does bother you:
1. Proudly wear your creations, tell everyone that asks that it is CROCHET.
2. Get a group together so that you can dispel the myth that crochet is not all doilys.
3. Teach classes about crochet.

I do everything I can (part of my reason for being a volunteer here at Bellaonline) to dispel many many myths about crochet. Together we can shattered everyone's believes about it. For instance did you know that for every ONE knitter there are THREE crocheters ?

Oh I wasn't offended about the commercial, I just had a life size image of everyone writing for the pattern (which is something that we all lust for....new patterns to turn into our own designs by adding and subtracting and creating a tacky item into a treasure. Sorry I have a disfunctional sense of humor....You know just visualizing the Glade people looking at their stats to see how the new product is doing and instead getting all these request for patterns from crochet junkies. (I wasn't trying to get a revolution against glade started)
Oh well, not the first time my sense of humor has been over the top.
Welcome rdywenur to the forum. I don't remember your name, maybe you have posted before but hopefully we can change your mind about crochet when you see some of our projects. The cocoon sweaters are nice. Have you seen those?

rdywenur,

Sorry that you think crocheters make tacky items. Apparently you havent seen some of the crocheted things I've seen people on here and on a few other forums make. I consider myself an advanced crocheter, and I'm always in awe of other people's work.

Knitting and crochet are just two different techniques for creating things with yarn...neither one is better than the other.

Also, about tacky items...I cant say the same thing about knitting...knitting (which I cant do) makes some amazingly beautiful things...too bad the knitters themselves are sometimes so stuck on themselves they constantly come off as snobs to the rest of the yarn world.

I have to go back to crocheting some more tacky stuff...christmas is coming.
