"anyways, all this questioning does come from the same thought process I go through when I think about how society feels about children."

Exactly, Opilies! That is why I asked the question. I couldn't have said it better myself. I have found the same to be true of myself. I have never taken things at face value and always questioned why I should do something just because society expects me to...mainly religion and having children. That is why I wanted to know how many other cf's here rejected religion. It seems to me that we (cf's) tend to think things through a little more than the average person.

Yep - count me in, too. I think you've hit on something here!

I wasn't raised in any particular religion and am agnostic now. Even though my own father is a born-again and tries to convert me any chance he gets. No way! I am completely happy and content to not really know what the answers are.

I was raised Catholic, and now am ex-Catholic, if you will, but I still consider myself God fearing and a Christian person. I am also quite analytical (spent several years as a supply chain analyst and a programmer) and I am scientific (i.e. I believe in Darwin's theory of Evolution as the theory of why we are here) but I still believe that there is a power bigger than ourselves out there -- it gives me hope to have this faith. Otherwise if all we have is securalism, in my opinion that is not enough to prevent utter chaos in the world. Moralism gives us the belief that says for example that commiting a crime such as stealing or cheating or worse is wrong, etc... just having a law that states it is wrong would not be enough without belief in common decency and morality to prevent such wrong doing. To me having morality comes from your upbringing as a God fearing (define God however you like) person, whereas if you are raised secular/aetheist you don't have the liklihood of having those same feelings of moral right and wrong other than the fact that if you are caught you are going to jail.

my 2 cents.....

B2B30,

I have to respectfully disagree. I am completely atheist and do have a strong sense of morality. I know right from wrong, never stolen anything in my life, etc. Basically, my beliefs/morals can be summed up with the golden rule...."Do unto others as you would have done to you." I have never needed religion or laws to keep me in line.
(haha...I realize the "golden rule" is religious but it is the only part of religion I have ever agreed with).

I agree with you, Lynnk..

As Abe Lincoln said, "When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That is my religion."

Here's the way I look at the whole thing.

Things that are good have benefits outweighing costs. Bad things are the reverse. Without rules, one can simply analyze the pros and cons to determine what is right and what isn't. From this, people find patterns in what is right and what is wrong.

Religion, philosophy, and other guiding set of rules and beliefs help by reinforcing those patterns.

Does any of this make sense?

B2B you are the first Caltholic I met that is still Christian. Crazy isnt it. I am Christian myself but was never catholic. I wonder where the people who were raised Catholic and still are caltholic are hiding out at.
