Either way should be fine. I root most if not all of my plants into the substrate.

I have a plant in my 1 gallon, but am unsure what kind it is. I purchased a bag of bulbs in the pet department at Walmart. It is doing great and reminds me of a lily.

How long do the leaves live? Mine seems to be growing lots of new ones fast. Connie

They do grow pretty fast. When you notice any of the leaves looking ill, just clip them off. I'm not sure how long it takes for them to get to the point of having to be removed...I've never kept track, but new ones generally grow in pretty quickly.

Thanks! Mr. Fish seems to really enjoy the plant. He likes to hide under the leaves and attack his food when I feed him.
