What's your favorite Irish movie? Do you like the new movies coming out, or do you prefer the classics like "The Quiet Man?" Inquiring minds want to know...

Ah, "The Quiet Man;" I think my husband rather fancies himself as John Wayne. As to Maureen O'Hara's character, I'd have given them all the heave-ho (except, of course, for the fey padre; he is adorable).

I agree about Maureen's character. What pushed me over the edge was how John Wayne's character roughed her up and then hauled her home behind the cart. Not funny at all!
As far as other movies, I liked "The Secret of Roan Inish", "Circle of Friends" and the one about the 2 little boys and the horse. Can't remember the name right now, but Gabriel Byrne played the dad.

I wonder how the movie would have played if Katharine Hepburn had been cast in the Maureen's role? Differently, I'm sure. And can you imagine if Bette Davis was in it?

Yep, there's a lot about that movie that doesn't play today, isn't there? And when we

I've always wondered exactly what she said in Gaelic to the priest fishing at the stream. When I was little, that really intrigued me.

"Secret of Roan Inish" was fabulous. It was filmed very close to my aunt's house in Donegal. Dad was there then, and I'm told he was down watching them every day. I didn't know that when I first saw the movie, but as soon as the scenery changed from Belfast to the county, I was glued to the screen, picking out the details and swearing I knew every rock. Turns out it was true. I LOVE that movie.

Hmmm. Haven't seen "Circle of Friends," but I'll fix that right quick. (Read the book.)

"Into the West" is the name of that great flick with the two little boys and the horse. Magical, mystical, and so utterly, freaking believable...
