Hi, I'm still fairly new to sewing, so I stick mostly to pre bought patterns. Unfortunatly I was making up a maternity skirt for the first time, and managed to destroy the waistband part. It wouldn't have been a problem, if it had been a straight, covered band, (it's the type that folds over, with the hem that tucks up.) However this is shaped. It's slightly 'S' shaped, and now I'm stuck. I cannot really afford to replace the pattern, and I'm going to carry on, and hope intuition or genius strikes. I just wondered if anyone more experienced had any tips.

Thank you,
Junerose.

Where is the 'S' part of the waist band? or is the front/back of the skirt curved? If the waist band has elastic in it, then any shaping probably won't matter too much. You can probably trace the top edge of the skirt pattern (if that's where the curve is)onto tissue paper, add seam allowances and width for the elastic (x2), then trace it again to get the waist band. What do you think?

I remember in my maternity pants, the waistband had an opening in the side... I had extra elastic tucked in, with stitches every inch or so. As I expanded, I could take out the stitches - giving myself some extra stretch.

Hi Junerose,

Sounds like a good response from Tammy.

I would also suggest emailing the pattern company that you have lost the tissue piece that has the waistband on it. For good public relations, they might be willing to send you the missing tissue piece. It is worth a try and the email is free.

Let me know how you make out.
Sharon
