...This question has many different sides to it. First of all what does immortal mean? Are you speaking of absolute immortality or do you admit different degrees? If for instance after the death of the body something remains which lives for some time preserving its consciousness, can this be called immortality or not? Or let us put it this way: how long a period of such existence is necessary for it to be called immortality?...

...He again used the Eastern comparison of man with a carriage, horse, driver, and master..

...Man is a complex organization consisting of four parts which may be connected or unconnected, or badly connected. The carriage is connected with the horse by shafts, the horse is connected with the driver by reins, and the driver is connected with the master's voice. But the driver must hear and understand the master's voice. He must know how to drive and the horse must be trained to obey the reins. As to the relation between the horse and the carriage, the horse must be properly harnessed. Thus there are three connections between the four sections of this complex organization. If something is lacking in one of the connections, the organization cannot act as a single whole. The connections are therefore no less important than the actual 'bodies.' Working on himself man works simultaneously on the 'bodies' and the 'connections.' But it is different work...

...As you see, there exist four quite different situations. In one case all the functions are controlled by the physical body. It is active; in relation to it everything else is passive. In another case the second body has power over the physical. In the third case the 'mental' body has power over the 'astral' and the physical. And in the last case the fourth body has power over the first three. We have seen before that in man of physical body only, exactly the same order of relationship is possible between his various functions. The physical functions may control feeling, thought and consciousness. Feeling may control the physical functions. Thought may control the physical functions and feeling. And consciousness may control the physical function, feeling, and thought.

In man of two, three, and four bodies, the most active body also lives the longest, that is, it is 'immortal' in relation to a lower body.

This is ordinary man, man number one, two, three and four. He has only the physical body. The physical body dies and nothing is left of it. The physical body is composed of earthly material and at death it returns to earth. It is dust to dust and it returns. It is impossible to talk of any kind of 'immortality' for a man of this sort. But if a man has the second body, this body is composed of material of the planetary world and it can survive the death of the physical body. It is not immortal in the full sense of the word, because after a certain period of time it also dies. But at any rate it does not die with the physical body.

If a man has a third body, it is commposed of material of the sun and it can exist after the death of the 'astral' body.

it is composed of material of the starry world, that is, of material that does not belong to the solar system, and therefore, if it has crystallized within the limits of the solar system there is nothing within this system that could destroy it. This means that a man possessing the fourth body is immortal within the limits of the solar system.

You see, therefore, why it is impossible to answer at once the question: Is man immortal or not? One man is immortal, another is not, a third tries to become immortal, a fourth considers himself immortal and is, therefore, simply a lump of flesh.

My personal philosophy on Teo's post is that even beyond the 4 bodies is permanent consciousness, and that through successive incarnations man can live - even while on earth - as a manifestation of his immortal nature.

I think the opportunity exists for all souls - as we come from perfection and will through personal experience on earth, time after time if need be, regain a fully enriched perfection.

I like the analogy of the sparkling clear and clean blank painter's canvas being fully brought to life through its transformation into a masterpiece.

Hello Teo,

Reading Your post was very interesting to me. I am quite interested about Your mentioned subject Immortality lately, and I got to my personal conclusion. I think unless we are not immortal, nothing can bring us a deep fulfillment. We may feel very happy and fulfilled, love other human being or manifest God thru us, whatever, but unless we are not immortal, what for is that??? I also think, that if we are not immortal, the whole concept of Bible would be for nothing. You know, they write there, that people who believe in God, will get life eternal in heavenly realm. I am not talking here about the physical body, which like any other material forms fades and later disappears, but about the soul. The soul which makes us unique. I think, man can never prove immortality, thus can only be manifested thru BELIEVE!

Very well stated Karen! You are nicely over-positive like I like to think I am. You remind me I used to think of a "potentiated society" where everybody has the resources to do what they love to do as much as they like, and what a great world it'll be hum? Thanks for your great reply!

Antimom, (funny name-I just last night saw a show saying that it is mother-love that makes us different than all other animals, 10+ years of compassionate teaching and learning makes us different that animals that have everything pre-programmed and don't need mother-love!) you also make me think with your reply, thanks ever so!

The whole "what part is immortal" question, that I have thought about a bunch, comes to a question that always changes me every time I think of it. If there are various parts or bodies or consciousnesses that are all me...

Who is the "I" asking who "I" am?

Would a car want to know who is driving it? And to where? And why? Maybe we can visualize a horse more interested in it's rider and purpose...

It makes me go into another direction, all these bodies that we are composed of, and it makes me think of how the organs work together. They don't "ego trip" and try to be better than each other eh? In fact I think the organs help each other and work just about perfectly together hum?

My own result from these thoughts is that I hope I am a good body, or vehicle, for whatever other body I am a part of. Like, may I be a "smart car" driving well and steady, or a healthy horse carrying my driver - and overall purpose - where they need to go well. I think the model of how the organs work together is a good one.

And perhaps our deeds, accomplishments, and how true we are to our purpose, maybe this is the real identity - and lives much beyond and outside of our physical bodies, and we are simply carriers of our slots in life, our particular specialtes? I am inspired by this idea and it is what makes me enjoy dialoging about these things with folk like you all, I feel fulfilled but not like in-my-body, almost like an out-of-body thing, because it is just being me, but on a bigger scale somehow.

Just some thoughts. Thanks for the wonderful opportunity to share them! May we all have the mortality and immortality that we wish and enjoy them fully!

Dear Susan,

I almost forgot! Your last line reminded me of a buddhist statement that I like, Being a clear window pane for seeing through. Allowing _____ever to see clearly through me, not being an obstruction. I like your clear and clean blank painter's canvas too!

[b]Hello Teo,

Immortality is A Wonderful Subject to Contemplate...

I Would Like To recommend A book with regards to your
post, It is called: [color:"purple"]"The Immortal"[/color].

I can't find my own copy and can't remember the name
of the author, but it is one of the books which made
a difference in my life. I read it in one swig, just
couldn't put it down... (Book Cover is very Red).

The Author leaves it to the reader to decide if it's
a True story or Fiction. I think that regardless of
which one chooses to believe, it is well worth reading.

To Magical Life !
