Twenty years ago, scientists were decrying the appearance of the zebra mussel in the filthy, polluted Great Lakes. It was an environmental catastrophe. Ballast water from Japanese ships was blamed. Oh, whatever would happen?
Now, at least one of the lakes is clear, clean and home to edible wall-eye for the first time in heaven knows how long.
The zebra mussel, that little dickens, is a filter feeder, and their proliferation in the lakes is responsible for removing the particulate junk that had collected in these lakes.
Call this a parable of a kind, okay?
I don't advocate waste, pollution, or irresponsible reproduction, and you are right on many points, but please don't bring family size into the conversation. These are people you are talking about, not Soylent Green. I actually fear for our species, for many of the same reasons you offer. Methinks we may need more babies, not fewer in the times to come if the human race is to survive.
Pollution and the things that are so important to us all are not caused entirely by population. They are caused by environmental abuses permitted by corrupt and irresponsible industry and government. And ignorance. And a lot of other things, but the planet has the capacity to bear many more people than are already here without becoming overpopulated. Don't judge the population by the relatively few big cities and suburbs. There are still vast areas of the U.S. even that are quite sparsely populated. But most people wouldn't want to live in these places.
People who don't want to have kids shouldn't have them. People who feel as you do who want to have children, maybe they will adopt them.
People who want large families and are willing to make the sacrifices involved should not be emotionally or spiritually molested for their choice. All the children of all the devoutly religious who obey the rules of their faith and have large families put together would not amount to a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things. It's all the gazillion people who have three kids who make the mess.<G>
Peace,
