I found a nifty sweater pattern and it says to make it in "Cotton Top" by Susan Bates. I tried Googling for info on this yarn/thread, but didn't find anything. Anyone know what might be an equivalent?

I know I could just start trying different weights until I got the gauge right, but it might be a bit faster to start with something that's at least similar.

Any clues appreciated!

Susan

From what I found, it's actually a Susan Bates/Patons yarn from the '80's? I haven't found any useful info on it, though.

The plot thickens... the 1980s would be about right. I just noticed (duh) that the magazine this pattern appears in is the May '84 issue of "Handmade."

And... someone is selling a leftover skein on e-Bay here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ssPageName=WDVW
(which kinda looks like cotton tots).

Then... I saw a pattern leaflet with a summer weight top (bottom right in the picture) that says it's made with Cotton Top yarn by Patons. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ssPageName=WD1V

Anyone care to speculate on whether Patons Grace is the new Cotton Top?

Susan

I thought maybe that was the case. If you look in your project book, it should have a section about what kind of yarn is used with the gauge that would have been specified on the original yarn. With that, try the yarn switcher. I have a Pengouin pattern book that has the same thing. What I found yesterday, listed the yarn as "Susan Bates Patons Cotton Top". Also, Susan Bates products are made by Coats & Clark who make Patons, I believe.

Unfortunately, because this is simply a "crafts" magazine there's no additional info about the yarn. I guess they were assuming I'd know what I was doing. (Ha ha!) I think I'll start with something like Patons Grace and see how it goes.

hi it looks like the cotton top yarn is like a boucle' is kind of bumpy. i wonder if a sport weight boucle would work.

You're right, Merwyn, it does look sort of slubby -- especially in the picture with the top already made up. The hook size suggested in the pattern is a G, which I think would work with a sport weight yarn.

Thanks!
