I've had my cats for over 10 years, and recently one of them has begun to go on the carpet nearby my bathroom, or on the floor in the bathroom, regardless of her litter box. Usually the litter box has been used once when she begins to go on the floor, and I am not about to change the litter box after one use. What on earth is happening here??

My cats did that, too. It can be an age thing, or possibily that they don't like the litter. It can also be because one of the other cats is harrassing them around the cat box (that was one of my problems). I took one of mine to the vet when she did that and it turns out she was trying to tell me something. She was having kidney problems and we needed to switch to special food.

You should take her in for a check up.

Whenever I've known a cat that disregards litter box use after many years with no accidents, it's either due to emotional stress on the cat's part, or a health problem.

I second the idea of taking your cat to the vet to identify or rule out physical causes.

This seems like a bit of a stretch, but do you think she might be trying to get attention? I recently got new pets and I've been playing with them a lot. Do you think she's jealous? my other cat, Fern, is just as old as the problem kitty, Bambi, but Fern doesn't mess on the floor for no reason.

[color:"purple"]i agree...take the cat in for a check-up. male cats will not use the box if they're having a problem with their urine crystalizing (forget what the condition is called). females can also develope the condition (altho it's more rare in females).

if the problem isn't medically based, then attention is most probably the issue...either you've just been more busy than normal or you've got new pets in the house. a bit of individual attention, on a daily basis, will resolve the problem pretty quickly. [/color]

that happened to my cat when she was getting ill. I agree with taking your cat to the vet. If nothing else, it will eliminate health problems and then you can try changing the litter, etc.
