I have a 1977 Woman's Day special edition magazine that contains two patterns for "Circle Wraps", another name for cocoon sweaters. Both patterns note that "no instructions are given for increases in the circle after the first few rounds; on each round, increase only enough to keep the work flat". This is not the first time I have encountered this type of instruction and am wondering why the designer does not give instructions for the increases that were used to test the pattern. Adding a sufficient number of increases to keep the work flat without "ruffling" always seems to be such a trial and error process, causing more frogging than I care to even think about. It seems to me that there has to be a mathematical formula that is applicable to this process. Any thoughts?
