For quiet nights at home, I prefer word games (Scrabble, Boggle, Scattergories, etc.) I also like to play these games in foreign languages for practice any time I get the chance (although it is better when you have that language's modified letter set; French has lots of X's, for example, so it's not as hard of a letter to play off). For parties and large groups of friends, I like the new style of variety games, like Cranium, as well as the predecessors to that sort of game, like Pictionary, Taboo, Balderdash, etc. I'm also always up for a cutthroat game of cards (different forum, I know), I like Spades and Poker the best. With very young kids (2-3 y.o.), I like to make games out of the Melissa and Doug magnetic bug and fish puzzles (your turn, now my turn, etc.). With slightly older kids, (4-5 y.o.) I like concentration and go-fish, as well as games like Hi-Ho Cherry-O and Operation. Once kids are in school and learning to read and have developed fine motor skills, I like to play modified versions of adult games with them (Scrabble, Boggle, Monopoly, Checkers, Othello, Pictionary, etc).
