Nine months after Hurricane Charlie hit Punta Gorda ( My home) in Southwest Florida, there is still devastation everywhere.. Homes that have been left condemned are still standing empty. There is very little new construction.. All the money is in repairs. If one is lucky to find a contractor, unless you pay his asking price, he just moves on to some one else..There have been conviction on (Price Gouging).. We have multitudes of construction workers from all over the US and Mexico.. But they cannot keep up
Some of you might ask, ( Why would anyone want to live in Florida?) At the last count.. There are now 17 million people living in Florida.. The waiting list to have a new home built is two years.. Property values have sky rocketed, home prices have gone through the roof
Now the new hurricane season starts in early June..Time will tell

Frank,

I certainly hope that you will not have to live through any hurricanes this year! Have you had the repairs done on your home?

What about your plans for escaping to -- I think you said --West Virginia?

Stay safe!

Franek,

I was just wondering about how you are doing. I heard a report yesterday stating that there are many new houses built in Punta Gorda but frm what you stating it does not look so. They were talking that much stricter building norms are going to be imposed and everything is going to go up in price. They were also predicting that this year would bring some big hurricanes possibly in the same area.

Let's pray that it would not hit your part of the world.

Maybe you can move to Idaho? But this year weather is terrible. It is so dark, rainy and cloudy. In some aspect it is good because they had drought here for too long. But this night it was raining and it was so windy that my daughter was afraid to hear - it sounded like a ghost whining outside

Nancy, Yes, my home sustained $38,000.00 in damage..
All but 10% still has to be done.. Mostly in new flooring.. My new roof still has not passed county inspection.. No big deal.. I held back $5000.00 until it is repaired right.
Since my stroke, all of my plans for building a second home in WV is just a memory..
I have a Brother in Orlando.. I can always go there .. And he can co.
me here depending on where the hurricane makes Landfall.
I have lived here since 1971 and never saw anything like last year.. Yes there have been lessons learned.. There are things that I can do to protect my property..

Leslie>> Lol,, you never forgot .

You forgot the rest

A few minutes ago. There was a knock at the door.. It was The State of Florida Agricultural dept ask for permission to cut my existing citrus trees down.. Citrus Canker has been found on a couple of trees up the road from me.. To keep from spreading, all trees within a 1/2 mile need to be removed.. The state pays me $100.00 a tree

WELCOME TO FLORIDA

Frank,

If you are good at planning and can nail down when the next hurricane comes your way, you can buy a ticket to Alaska from Orlando for $399. I'll coordinate on the earthquake end!

I came up here in '71 also. Good choices we made, from the sound of our comments!

Kai
