Show on Discovery channel has prompted this question. Do you belive the holy grail is a mere cup or the womb of Mary Magdalene

Personally I believe it is a cup. I did read the Da Vinci code and can see either argument. Its a very interesting topic though.

The Holy Grail is presumed to be a cup....however the "cup of the Covenant" is simply the covenent that God made with Abraham concerning the future of the nation fo Israel in it's "entirety".

As for the Da Vinci Code...remember it is a work of fiction, a story...not based on fact. There are no deep secrets in the book that are being mysteriously revealed. The author just made up some story and published it. He could have used any combination of names, however, I don't hink he would have made quite so much money.

But what do you think I mean personally? Do you beleive that there is no room for question that the grail was infact an item or are you open to the possiablity that it is the blood line.

[color:"green"]in answer, msbones, I think that the Holy Grail is a covenant between God and his people, not a real item at all, not a cup or a womb <img src="/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />... but a promise. [/color]

I always thougth that the holy grail was the cup that Jesus drank from. But I guess that thought came from movies I saw years ago.
Funny how we get a thought (learning it from a fictional source) and accept it as true. - Never researching it and finding out the real story.

The DaVinci Code was full of inaccuracies and improbabilities, also. For example, the heroine recalls her father taking her to see the Mona Lisa in its special room when she was a child. However, the Mona Lisa was in the Grand Salon until quite recent years. Again, what police force would rush off from the scene of a fresh murder, without leaving a cop behind to guard the murder scene?

If the Holy Grail is the cup from which Jesus drank, it is no "mere cup." It is, as pointed out by others, a sign of the covenent and lasting relationship between Jesus and his followers.

The Da Vinci Code is soooooooo bad with history. For example, the listing of Sandro Botticelli as a Grand Master of the Priory of Scion. Huh, Botticelli was his nickname, not his real name.

There are good articles here that deal with this. Here's just one: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art13965.asp

ok for more fun... you might want to check out The Woman with the Alabaster Jar: Mary Magdalen and the Holy Grail by Margaret Starbird, Bear & Co. 1993. Written before The DaVinci Code but definitely spurred to investigation by Holy Blood Holy Grail. The author was shocked by such heresy and set out to refute it, but instead claims she found new and compelling evidence...Worth a read, as it is thought-provoking historically, even if you don't buy it theologically.
