My hubby and I were discussing the pending marriage of Prince Charles and came around to the subject of the public feelings toward Princess Diana before they were married. He thinks the adverse feelings were due to her being from U.S.A.?! I thought she was from Whales and had royalty in her lineage? Is anyone out there that can help?

Diana was not from the USA. <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I don't have my books (and I have a lot of them!) about her handy to give you specifics. But, I shall locate them and get back to you on her history.

Diana was born Lady Diana Spencer, the youngest daughter of Earl Spencer. Definately not from the US.

The Spencer family are a very old English family (interesting fact: the clothing item "spencer" was named after the family)and were related to royalty back about 6 or so generations (this is common with most of the English aristocracy).

Diana was (IMHO), one of the world's best PR people - she instinctivly knew how to manipulate the press for the best possible image.

Contrary to what she seemed, she was also a savvy politician. Don't ever forget that she was the daughter of a Courtier and knew all the politics involved in a royal court.

Whilst she did have genuine care about what she was doing, it came from who she was, not how she was raised.

Indeed, it was total Dianamania before they were married. You couldn't swing a rat w/out hitting something w/ her pic on it - teas towels, pub mats, all that stuff.

I remember getting up waaaay early in the morning here in Ohio to watch the wedding. And, unfortunately, I remember also getting up early in the morning to watch her funeral.

My Mom & I just went down to Dayton, OH, to see the Diana exhibit at the Dayton Art Institute, the Wed before last - it's last US stop, BTW. It is absolutely *amazing*! It's open until 11 June, if anyone is interested. No matter how far you have to travel, it is *definitely* worth the trip! And the tix are very inexpensive, as well. I want to go back!

Hi Karyn!

Yeah - fellow Ohioan, but you're in Germany now, which a lot closer to England than I am right now. I haven't been since '99, & I'm in *serious* w/drawl!!!

Jim was just in Orlando a couple wks ago, & he ran into a British import shop. He brought me this *massive* goodie bag, full of Cadbury Flake, digestives, & of all things, Batchelor's Mushy Peas!! I love it!

Well, I can get British goodies here. They sell them at a Canadian-run grocery on base. If you want me to bring you anything, just let me know. I don't think I'll be going back to England until August.

"I thought she was from Whales"

Call me a big sexy silly old sausage but I think you mean Wales matey. It's that bit next to England (look it up if you don't beleive me). Anyway, she was a posh bird from England. It's true. She was a bit of an airhead* but still far too good for old charlie boy. I have a theory about all this, but it's a secret.

* no offence

Her greatgreatgreat(something) was the Spenser who wrote the famous Faerie Queene poem. (yes, no c in Spenser at that time)

She indeed was a blueblood. And is much missed.
