I got an email last week that I can't answer. I've looked as far as I can on the web.
Here's the readers' question: ------------------------------------------------------------ please i need to know what is the proper way, when naming my sons after their father, "jr is next, then whats after that? (third or first), i was told in college (I), comes after jr. and so on. but alot of people name their child the III after jr. which i personally think is improper.
from dar and renee ------------------------------------------------------------
I need some help on this one people. If you know anything about the proper way to name children this way, please comment to question.
Thanks.

My understanding is that Jr. is the second child with the same name. Then it would be III.

I thought it would be the III too.

My Uncle is a junior (Dale, Jr.-we call him Scotty because my maiden name is Scott so that is their last name) because my grandfather is also named Dale. Meaning my uncle is the second. Dale, Jr. has a son who is also named Dale. He is Dale, III (We call him Trey for short). My brother is a Junior, if he has a son, the boy would be a III.

Are you sure there is a "proper" way to do it?
My husband's family line is up to the fifth.-- V. As far as I know there never was a Jr. My husband is the III. No nicknames. They are all Jim. I guess they enjoy confusing people.

Hi all. Thanks so much for your input into this Junior question.
I'll send an email to these people and let them know what your opinions are. Your opinions are very valuable to me! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Junior is used when the son is named after his father. That's son's son would be the III. II is used when a boy is named after his grandfather (possible no sons in 2nd gen only 3rd), and then that boy's son would be the III.
