Why the preference? Because no matter how bizarre fiction authors may make their cases, nothing competes with the bizarre thought processes or actions of the real life criminal.
I think I might be prejudiced since I am ex-LAPD but I feel The Onion Field by J. Wambaugh is one of the best police procedurals I have ever read. Nothing pleasant about it. Just the facts ma'am.
