Is Domestic Violence a Human Rights Issue?

Human rights issues are issues of government and policy. Domestic violence is between private parties NOt between governments or between private parties and government. It is a law enforcement issue. It is also a RELATIONSHIP issue. When some people get better educated about their proper role in relationships then a lot of it will stop.

What is their proper role in relationships, TexasDave? To be punching bags? I think not. I watched my parents beat the [censored] out each other for the first half of my life. Do you know what it's like to watch your parents scream at each other and basically declare that they're going to kill the other at some point in time? It's horrid. and it's a human rights issue. the Goverment does need to do more to help those in these situations. not enough is done.

Possibly. Governments need statistics to fund projects. OR....if issue is emotive enough then GOV know they can save money by allowing charitys or other interested agencies to fulfill role.

I read through this post and quite honestly, was shocked to see someone post such insensitive words. Domestic violence is definitely an issue for our government. If our government leaders are not properly trained, or are ignorant of the fundamentals of domestic violence, then issues such as two more recent ones, will occur. The first current issue is the fact that the Supreme Court ruled that women do not have a constitutional right to expect enforcement of restraining orders, by state law enforcement officers. The second is the Violence Against Women Act, which has currently expired, and needs to be passed hopefully tomorrow.

Yes, it IS an issue for our political and governmental leaders. Texasdave, please tell me what you believe to be each partners 'proper role' in a relationship. I personally lived through nearly 11 years of the thinking which you seem to possess and will no longer remain silent at such words. I was maritally raped for the length of my marriage and told I 'must' submit.

No woman deserves to be battered in any form, not mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, or sexually...period.

Domestic violence will not stop, until our government gets more actively involved and begins to protect the victims, whether they be male or female.

Well, of course they won't. Secrecy is usually a big issue when it comes to domestic violence--that's why some shelters are even in undisclosed locations.

I wouldn't necessarily want a shelter having records that I'd been there or where I'd gone.

Yes, I know exactly what that's like. When I said they needed to better understand their role in the relationship I meant the abuser not the abused. The proper role in a relationship is loving and supportive not controlling and abusive.

Perhaps I was not as clear and concise as I meant to be. Government should take a stand to support law enforcement in it's battle against ALL violence. Domestic violence is just one issue of violence of many. While the victim of that violence i.e women, children, the aged etc. may affect particular law enforcement techniques, singling out a particular type of victim for special governmental attention is discriminatory to other victims and is unequal protection under the law and might well violate the 14th amendment.

In all fairness, I think Dave was taken to task simply for his gender. He never stated anything negative directly against women in relationships.

I strongly suspect that had the post been made by TexasDAISY3, the remarks might have been more along the lines of agreement that MEN are not clear on their roles in a healthy relationship.

That is, after all, the bottom line - HEALTHY relationships.
