If you read all the diet books, one of the common threads you read in all of them is that we as a population wolf down food too quickly. We eat while driving, eat while watching TV and as a result we eat much more food than we need. And we get fat.

Do you find in general that you eat this way - or do you try to eat slowly, paying attention to your eating? One of the theories of why French people can eat 'fattening' food but not overeat is that they talk and hang out while they eat, so they eat slowly and don't overstuff themselves.

It's hard with us all being so incredibly busy, but maybe slowing down on eating can really make a difference. Studies even show that playing slow, quiet music while eating can help greatly. People who eat with high-paced music playing end up eating more (and gaining more weight) than those who eat while listening to slow music

I had a 6th grade teacher that was ahead of her time (holistic all the way). Our parties were unlike any other homeroom: we had healthy foods like popcorn with "sprinkle", devilled eggs, pizza, etc. She had a timer on her desk where she'd drink a glass of water every hour.

Of the many things she impressed on us was that we needed to chew each bite 32 times. Whether it was her influence or just the way I am, I am a very slow eater. I love to savor my food and simply cannot eat quickly. I'm always the last one done at the table.

I actually consider eating a hobby, hehe!
I like enjoying a meal while also enjoying conversation.

I don't know if my approach to eating is the right one, but I am the heaviest I have ever been (excluding pregnancy) at 113 pounds.

Definitely eating slowly and talking while you eat is one of the secrets to eating healthy amounts! If you're still gaining weight I'd look at WHAT you are eating, but HOW you are eating sounds quite wonderful

Janet, your teacher definitely sounds like a wonderful role model!

We went to friends for dinner on Saturday night and they made us a delicious low carb dinner, with lobster tails, salmon, green beans and salad. We all sat around eating and enjoying it. But even so, everybody was getting up and clearing their plates when I was still eating my green beans! I felt so abandoned, sitting at the table nibbling my beans while everyone else headed into the kitchen

To Lisa: I added some extra pounds while pregnant and did not shed them all.

I don't mind the extra weight as I have been considered underweight all my adult life. I am interested in health and fitness.

I do need to improve my eating habits and I need to tone some muscles.

My husband is trying to loose a few pounds. High carb foods act like his long lost friends and cling to him.

XLadyRogue - too funny on your husband!! If you're at your ideal weight right now then that's a good thing. Definitely all low carb diets highlight the importance of exercise. I think when you eat low diet you end up with far more energy than you do when you eat high carbs and fall asleep after every meal. So you're more likely to go out and do things. I know that last spring when we were still high-carbing we had no energy at all and wouldn't even consider being active. But this spring we've already got the bikes down at the bike shop because we're eager to get out riding

The trick is to find an activity you both really enjoy doing, so it's fun to go out and do it together

Ahh well, the scales tell me I have somehow lost three pounds. Hmmm.

Our demanding schedule and hectic life play a large part in the feeling of weariness but diet does too.

Muscle is heavier than fat so this could be good incentive to start working out. Many people who get down into their ideal weight range start to 'lose weight' by not exercising, i.e. their muscle slouches and turns to fat. But that of course isn't a healthy thing. We need to find you quick 15 minute exercise routines that are very focussed, so you build that muscle up which will give you a toned body and a healthy weight gain

I am supposed to be excercising and I do want to...actually fitting that in to my daily life is another matter.

Considering what I do at my job..it's really sad.
