I am at my wit's end! My husband and I purchased a user LandRover Discovery about a year ago. Since we bought the vehicle, we have had to put almost $4000 into the vehicle. It seems that everything that can go wrong...has.

We have had to replace the ignition, the alternator, the entire front brakes and more. Currently, the passenger side door does not unlock; nor does the rear door. We need to service the oxygen sensor and some belts need to be replaced.

We did some research before we purchased it, but apparently not enough. If you are thinking about purchasing a car, I would say DEFINITElY do NOT purchase a LandRover Discovery. It's the pits!

Wow, that's pretty scary. You would think they would pay for those sorts of things if it's so new!

That the thing. We purchased the car from a private seller and not a dealership!

ok....yeah u should have researched beforehand Discos are well known for goin reeeeal nasty. they are very unreliable and the stuf that goes wrong with them is quite major. a lot of the time its the CV Joints or clutches and head gaskets etc etc. and i had loadsa probs with locking aswell.

i've had a lot of bad experiences with many Landies (esp Discos) and theres way too many to mention. LandRovers are fantastic machines, but if u want to buy one and not use it to off-road properly and mind when things drop off, then u have to get a Landie that is not over 2 years (the newer style) and they are VERY xpensive u could also go for a much older style and even a Defender - i think Discos suck compared to ANY Defender.

one time (and this has happened to ma frind recently) i was goin uphill in a Disco - fair enuff it was a race n i wanted to win - but the clutch just fell out of the bottom of the car...absolutely insane. i put it down to me thrashing it a bit, but the same thing happened to my friend with all of her family in the car at a busy roundabout, which was very scary.
Discos are not to be trusted

ohw and if ur buying from a private dealer, grab hold of sum1 u know and u can rely on, otherwise u SHOULD NOT trust them. they want to get rid of a Landie for a reason

every1 that i know that have Landies rely on a strong network of reliable people that love Landies as much as we do and just want every1 2 xperience what great cars they are go to shows, conventions, places where Landies are used a lot and make contacts :rolling:

Hi MariaT,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. There isn't much you can do about it now, except purchase a warranty if it isn't too expensive.

But I do have some tips for buying a used car. I've worked in the auto repair business for over 10 years and here are some things I've picked up along the way:

1. Have a mechanic check it out. You can arrange to bring a mechanic with you or ask the seller to take the car to a mechanic of your choice at your expense. Sure, you'll have to pay for the mechanic's services, but how does $100 compare to $4,000. Have the mechanic put his/her findings in writing. If the needed repairs are minor, and you still want the car, you may be able to negotiate with the seller to either fix them or come down on the asking price.

2. If you decide to check out the vehicle yourself, take along an inspection list. There is a good one at [url=BellaOnline ALERT: For anti-spam reasons, we restrict the number of URLs allowed in a given post. You have exceeded our maximum number of URLs.
